Class 70
Class 455 ( Southern)
Class 458
Class 319

I disagree with Class 319. There's nothing particularly handsome about them, but they're the best of the Mark 3 EMUs in my opinion. 317s and 455s, especially the early ones, have very ugly fronts, and the 321 front end is a bit ungainly, but I thought the 319s had quite attractive cab windows and a decent slope to them.

All those stairs and doors!

Not really a proper double decker either, with those interlaced upper seating areas rather than a proper full-length upper deck.

There were also big gaps between all the lower level compartments to squeeze in the fans for the upper level pressure ventilation. Each compartment needed its own set! Typical Bulleid - a solution that created more problems than it solved.

With respect to the 455's, the /8's and the early 317's had the ugly fronts which were "improved" with the 455/7's, /9's and 317/2's.

Despite the front ends, the 317's had lovely interiors when new - esp the /2's
It’s not about what’s on the inside Robert...
We’re being purely superficial. ;)

The way TFW have let their 143s go inside which is understandable but not so on the outside with "this train terminates soon" advertising. They could have been better labelled with more upbeat wording and not in black which gives the impression of the train being it's own hearse. Then they are crammed well past capacity in the peaks.

The old tren y cwm valleys branding and the orange Glasgow area trains were the best for me tbh.

Just a gentle reminder this thread is to discuss
Ugliest Train in the UK; it isn't a' thread' to discuss crowding, branding and information displays ;)

NIR Class 4000.
I know it's not the main UK network, but they are seriously weird with the huge bulge above the front windscreen.

Anything with a corridor front end.
We are about to get a torrent of new-build monstrosities (CAF for WMT/TfW, Bombardier for WMT).
There are hardly any designs like that on the continent.

GB network you mean. NIR is in the UK, so their trains can qualify for this thread!

(Although post 1 says Britain, which conflicts with the title).

I want to agree, but if the alternative is this...

Tend to agree with the exception of the 380.

I think 345 and 700 are very ugly, as for gangway connections on the front, I love the simplicity and function of CEP VEP etc

I just came across this exact same photo on a news website somewhere and was about to post it (even if the thread is for the UK only!). Mind you, looks like it would be good in a head-on collision...

Another vote though for Southern's 455s' SWR's are fine, possibly apart from the odd coach on one of the subclasses.

Also the 465 and 466s.

Also couldn't work with other units due to having a unique non-lapping EP braking system rather than the usual self-lapping type.

Out of the list originally given, I'd pick the Class 43 (warship). A lot of the others on the list I think are just bland and boring rather than ugly.

To pick one myself I'd go for the Class 175.
