I’ve seen photo evidence of a Gatex 387 operating to Portsmouth this morning. Is this the furthest off route they’ve been in passenger service?

Is there any particular reason why they shouldn't go to Portsmouth? Are they in a dedicated pool or something?

Yes, they are only meant to be used on GatEx branded services, though they do occasionally, as in this case, end up elsewhere, as the only difference from regular ones is the colour of the seats and paint.

Do they all come under the same traction card?

No. They should but they don't. Those who used to drive 442s Sign 387s. Even though they're similar to the later 377s in basically every regard.

387s Might be used on Southampton Central services from next May whilst the Gatwick Works take place.

that’s interesting, what’s the thinking behind this? (The 387s on Southamptons)

Southampton is a substantial round trip from Gatwick - are there really enough 387s to run to Southampton and back and still provide them on the core service?

Well with GX being cut back to 2tph (No terminators at GTW). There's a lot of 387s sat around. THe 377s will be needed to strengthen other services.

This is what I've heard at work. The plan seems to change constantly.

It would be the Brighton-Southamptons

Are there enough spare for early 313 retirement

In my opinion 707s are more suited to 313 duty than 387s, especially as any 387s free aren't going to be enough. The free 387s could go to Great Northern to replace some of the 365s as 387s already operate on some of these routes, GWR is also an option but I doubt GTR would send the 387s away.

This is after all only about a temporary situation during platform rebuild works at Gatwick. Why is sending them anywhere even being considered...

Quite. Though as long as any such suggestions are being made in the correct forum section for ideas and suggestions, I don't mind people making them ;)

As for where 387s have been, GTR has allocated them to many routes. In the early days they were on the Midland Mainline and Sutton Loop. I believe they may even have also done Caterham/Tattenham services?

This morning, at about 0910 am, whilst waiting at the level crossing at Warblington (between Havant and Emsworth, what little took to be a Gatwick Express red coloured unit, went by on what l took to be on this service:
1N13 0826 Southampton Central to Brighton

I was rather surprised by this and was too far away to get its number.

Can anyone explain why the Gatwick Express Unit was on the West Coastway line. Is this or has this been a regular occurrence?

And again today...
1N04 06.32 Brighton to Southampton Central and the 1N13 08.26 return service will be operated by a 387.

EDIT: Now back to booked 377.

Odd, I wonder what is causing these unusual allocations? Could it be something to do with leaf fall meaning more units need the laithe?

I believe some Barnham, Brighton and Selhurst drivers sign 387s aswell as Gat Ex Vic drivers obviously.
