I have never bought/used a bus pass on the oyster card before. The local newsagents didnt explain it very well..

"its 3.90 for the day"

me "ok can i have it for monday"

"no no you dont understand, you buy it and THEN choose the day"

So he took my oyster card, and i have a receit for it "Add pay as you go 27/11/10 £3.90"

Can someone explain whats happened, how i use it, and if he has actually only topped up 3.90 onto it?

Thanks for any help!

That's exactly what he's done. You can't put a day buspass/travelcard on an Oystercard. You just load it up with cash then as you board each bus touch it on the reader. If you're only using the bus (and/or the Croydon tramlink) it deducts 1.20 for each of the first three journeys, then 30p for the fourth one,and then all subsequent journeys that start before 4.30am the following morning are free,ie it won't deduct anymore money.

You just use it to pay as you go - and get charged for each journey as you make it.

When you reach the price of the bus pass/travel card relevant to the journeys you've made, you are 'capped' - meaning the system just stops charging you for any more journeys.

So, the cap rate for a bus pass is £3.90, so he put £3.90 PAYG credit on your card. On your first journey you'll be charged £1.20 - a single fare. Then £1.20 on your second journey (£2.40 so far), another £1.20 on your third journey (£3.60 so far). Your fourth journey will only be charged at 30p because you'll hit the £3.90 cap. Any more journeys you make on the bus from then on will be charged at £0.00.

... if you were to go on the Tube, it'd start charging you again, until you got to the price of the relevant capping rate for the tube zones you used.

Yes, this is exactly what has happened. Day Bus Passes and Day Travelcards don't exist separately on Oyster. Instead, the system automatically "caps" your spending when you reach the daily limit (assuming you have always touched in correctly and, except for buses and trams, always touched out correctly).

Normally, you don't need to add pay-as-you-go credit specifically for a day's travel which will be capped. Just make sure you always have enough credit. Auto Top-Up from my bank account works well for me, but I know it doesn't suit everyone.

There is a very great deal more on Oyster at forum member MikeWh's excellent site oyster-rail.org.uk

I deduce from this that a one-day bus pass effectively costs £3.90 using an Oyster card, but that it is registered electronically rather than having a paper one issued.

Is it still possible to buy a one-day bus pass without an Oyster card though?

Yes it is registered electronically as you say.

No, I believe that the one day bus pass paper ticket has been withdrawn.

First of all, this thread is from last year, the prices have gone up since then and now and a day price cap is £4.00.

To answer your question, no. You put money on the Oyster card and get charged for each journey you make, so the first journey is £1.30, second is £1.30, third is £1.30 and fourth is 10p. All subsequent journeys that day are free.

It now costs £4, this thread having been bumped from last year. I don't believe you can still get a paper one-day bus pass anymore. The first bus journey deducts £1.30 from your balance, as do the second and third. The fourth time you touch in on a bus that day will result in 10p being deducted, and all subsequent touch ins will deduct nothing, but you still need to touch in as the driver has no way of knowing that you have a pass on your card.

Indeed, and you also need to touch in if you board at one of the back doors on a bendy-bus. And I believe if you don't you're eligible for a penalty fare, even if you have a bus pass on your Oyster?

I'm pretty sure whilst in London on Wed someone was pulled up on a bendy for not having touched in even though she had a valid pass loaded on the oyster.

I was on the bus a couple of rows behind her :)

Are you sure about that, I thought you were ok if you had a travelcard/bus pass
on your oyster

If you have a pass, as in a pre-loaded period bus pass or travelcard, you're okay. If you're just on a daily PAYG cap you need to touch in on every journey.

And you always need to touch in in front of the driver.

Not acording to Mojo in this thread . You must always touch in on the bus even when you have a period bus pass or travelcard on your card.

Thank you to everyone who has answered my question. It would be a shock to the system not to have a paper ticket. I often find my Travelcard for example provides a nice souvenir of my most recent London trip!
