Pretty sure it doesn’t count in the sense of being formally held against you, though?

You aren’t taken off, drug and alcohol tested, put on a plan, or anything along those lines, as would happen for a safety of the line incident. Where I am it seems to be viewed more like a minor improvement point on a download
The great minds at TPE's standards department currently put any driver who fails to cancel on a plan and you're off trains for a while. Madness!!

I’m surprised to hear that. The ORR stance is the route card belongs to the TOC not the driver. Unless they have softened recently?
I'm not sure tbh, I just know they allowed it with personally.

You wouldn't literally transfer the route card. You'd have a new route card with the new operator, but you wouldn't have to complete the full or normal amount of training before assessment. Makes complete sense.

I think the fairest way of assessing candidates is a very technical interview process with a rules exam and lots of face-to-face technical questions. I'm admittedly a bit biased because it's how I got the qualified driver move to my current TOC.

The DfT seem to be very anti-competitive for what is supposed to be a privatised railway.

If train sims were actually any good, a good way to assess a candidate is on a simulator.

You send the applicants a briefing pack about the basics of route and traction they'll be driving and then see how they perform in a given scenario. Seems to work well for airlines.

That's a great idea but in reality if the candidate hadn't signed the same or similar traction previously they would be at a significant disadvantage.

A technical interview is far better than a competency-based one since at least you know that the people you're hiring are clued up as opposed to being good talkers, a sim ride might be good too but if a TOC only has sims in one location and depots at opposite ends of the country it could be difficult.

I wonder if there’s a little bit of wanting to make it harder to move in order to remove the competitive market for qualified drivers that has driven up salaries.

That said, there’s also a clear need for the industry to encourage more “off the street” recruitment of new entrants, especially of younger candidates, as the demographics of the grade are such that a very high % of drivers will retire over the next 10-15 years. I can’t recall the exact figure, but something ridiculous like 40% of all current drivers are over 50.

100% I reckon, the current government only seems to like competition when it's in the interests of either the government or big business for it to exist.

Hi all,

Apologies but I'm looking to move onto mainline. Interested in LNER and I'm hearing rumours they may look at qualified drivers. However this rumour has been circulating for many months. Is there any truth in it.
Also, I have a incident on my record but was 6 years ago. Would LNER take my application into consideration or would it be a no no?

I used to sign Kings Cross to Peterborough including via Hertford North

I imagine what you sign or have signed makes no difference. A lot of drivers even of they have just transferred to a different depot signing the exact same routes have to route learn the familiar lines again
