Other than passing through to or from Wolverton it is unusual these days to see a 166 at Reading, but it looks like 166207 is working this evening Bourne End diagram.

2B42 1714 Maidenhead to Bourne End

I guess it worked up from Westbury earlier?

5R60 1115 Westbury to Reading Traincare Depot

Not a scheduled fleet changeover; will probably be undone again over the weekend, but 166207 needed to come out of service this lunchtime for fuel etc; and there was nothing available in the “West” Turbo fleet to replace it at Bristol; meanwhile Reading had a unit spare and a driver to take it to/from Westbury; so best use of resources available has resulted in the temporary swap. 165120 is the “East” unit that has gone West.

Looks as though with 166207 available for evening service, Reading have sent it out on a diagram that doesn’t see it go too far afield.

Thank you for the explanation. I guess it did not fit in with driver availability for 166207 to replace 165124 on the 2v3 Basingstoke diagram, and send 165124 to Bourne End which is booked a 2-car. Still, a 2-car Basingstoke is better than the 0-car that is the third Basingstoke diagram this evening.

About that...
166207 is showing as on Reading to Gatwick services today, so they clearly don't see an issue sending it further afield today!

It’s still captive and gets back to Reading, doesn’t start wandering to Oxford.

I've a bash on 166207 earlier today, and I must say it's well suited to the North Downs, especially with the additional luggage rucks that came handy for Gatwick passengers.

Also visits Reading regularly so that it could be swapped out to head back home if a driver became available to drive it and a unit available to replace it.

It looks like a plan is in place to swap over 165120 and 166207 on the 1708 Pompey - Cardiff at Westbury this afternoon

5Z30 1735 Reading Traincare Depot to Westbury

1F30 1708 Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central

5F30 1910 Westbury to Reading Traincare Depot

Are there any changes on the Thames Valley Turbo mainline diagrams post June 2024? Looking at RTT the 03:54 Reading - London Paddington as well as the extension to/from Greenford seem to be the only ones, which is the same as current.

Reading seem to be down a few units this morning with 165114 off 2J12 0739 Basingstoke - Reading being used to work 1O61 0823 Reading - Gatwick. The following Basingstoke has been cancelled

08:23 Reading to Basingstoke due 08:52 will be cancelled.
This is due to a broken down train.

As you may expect, the return 2J20 0919 Basingstoke - Reading was also shown cancelled, but that cancellation has now been deleted from journeycheck.

2J20 still shows as cancelled on RTT, but not on darwin. Even though RTT shows it cancelled, it also shows an allocation - 158885

Difficult to get right into downstream systems, which aren’t well setup for such adhoc cross-TOC cooperation, but the inference is correct.

2J19 is Cancelled
2J20 runs with SWR Unit and Crew

Currently 3 car 165108 is on 1C70 from Taunton and showing as running the full way to Pad on 1A81 although I have a feeling it will come off at Exeter

Don’t believe it will - it’s done the whole route before. Although not a good sign of IET availability

Assuming the online data is right, and various data sources certainly seem to corroborate it, I was stunned to see a 165 has been subbed in for an 80x to operate 1A81 Paignton to Paddington today! The cause appears to be a unit fault with the originally booked 80x from Paddington (0703 ex Pad) but quite a difference for a 3 car 165 to arrive in place of a 9 car IET – is this a common occurrence vs. just cancelling the service due to a train fault?

I wondered if it is a revenue service masquerading as a positioning move, but it doesn't appear to be – the 165 is also currently booked to do the return journey.

I don't envy the passengers or the staff operating this service. My recent experience on weekday non-peak departures from Exeter has shown these services to be well utilised.

It’s now showing on the departure boards at Taunton as running to Hungerford. Whether it runs fully to London is to be revealed—I suspect it will, but this will be a move to discourage passengers from overloading the train and encourage them to wait for the following service. By the time it reaches that far the following service 1A82 will have (at Westbury) or will soon (at Newbury) overtake it would be my guess.

I’m impressed it got as far as Reading with only one minute of delay. Whilst the B&H doesn’t have high line speeds, Turbos are not exactly the sprightliest off the mark.

It's on it's way back as 1C85. Maybe it's got free water on board. I have seen the local 165, 166s, and 150s pick up bottled water at Paignton during hot weather.

Been overtaken at Taunton by 1C86

Booked to work the return to Paddington too (possibly as far as Exeter). Ouch.

1A98 Paignton - Exeter, then swap for 1A37 Exeter - Bristol (with that IET covering remainder of 1A98); then swap again onto depot (with an IET continuing 1A37 to Paddington)

Does the new timetable require additional IETs? There's an extra 12.05 Padd to Plymouth, the 12.03 now calling at EXD only to Plymouth then stops to PNZ. The progress of the Turbo was being watched with interest down here in Devon, with bets on how far it would get.

Probably OT because it is not a turbo, and following on from the exploits of 165108 yesterday, today 1C70 is allocated 158745 from Westbury and 1A81 to Exeter.

On turbo matters I assume 5Q81 is 166213 this evening and 5Q23 a.n.other going to Doncaster tomorrow
