£70 million funding approved for redevelopment of Peterborough station

https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/ne...eterborough_live_newsletter2&utm_medium=email
The area around Peterborough rail station is set for a makeover after millions of pounds of funding were approved. The Board of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) has approved funding of £70m for the Peterborough Station Quarter project.
Central to the overall project is a new western entrance to the station and associated parking. Currently, the only parking is east of the tracks, so development of a double-sided station – allowing easy access for cyclists, pedestrians, and cars to both east and west – will alleviate pressure on city centre roads making it safer to get around Peterborough by bike.

Sounds a bit unambitious to me.

For Peterborough, I would centre the station on a much larger footbridge with a large number of facilities on there, a bit like Utrecht stations in the Netherlands.

£70 million funding approved for redevelopment of Peterborough station

It's only a 'Levelling Up Fund' bid entry at the moment - to quote from the article (my bolding):

The area around Peterborough rail station is set for a makeover after millions of pounds of funding were approved. The Board of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) has approved funding of £70m for the Peterborough Station Quarter project.

Speaking to members of the Board at their resumed AGM (27 June), Metro Mayor, Dr Nik Johnson, said: “In March, the Government announced this second round of the Levelling Up fund – for transport-only projects that will uplift local areas, support town centre and high street regeneration, and make the most of cultural and heritage assets.

“Under the Government’s levelling-up rules, the CPCA is allowed to submit only one transport project for funding, and the winning bid came from Peterborough. The project having gained a unanimous thumbs-up from the Board, the CPCA team will now collaborate closely with Peterborough City Council in drafting the application before submitting the bid by the 6 July deadline.
and:
Peterborough Station Quarter is a £70m project, the funding value for this Levelling Up Fund bid is £48m. Match funding from the project is expected from Peterborough City Council, Network Rail, LNER, and commercial and residential development.

If the bid is successful, the CPCA will act as a grant funding body to delivery partners. Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) guidance states that Levelling Up funding needs to be spent by 31 March 2025, and exceptionally, into 2025-26 for larger schemes, of which the full Peterborough Station Quarter scheme would be one.

No additional platforms or capacity? Wouldn't the footbridge be quite long - given the stabling roads west of the new platforms?

The current footbridge already extends beyond the Two-way goods line, to the west of Platform 7. It allows access to the Network Rail offices at Crescent House, albeit for those with permitted access. Wasn't the bridge extended in this manner, as part of the new platforms, with a view to the building of the Western entrance?

So is Crescent House the Portacabin office block behind the station? I thought this was just while they built the extra platforms and associated work in that area. Is it temporary or has it become permanent fixture.

It's become semi-permanent; CRSA and Network Rail use it as a regional base.
After the extra platforms were built, it became a project office for the ECML Power Supply Upgrade, among other projects.

What stabling? The only line west of P7 is a down freight.

Also confused where the need for more additional platforms is.

Thanks.

There has been an announcement on funding for the Peterborough station regeneration see here:

A £65m project to regenerate the area around a city centre railway station has been approved by the government.
A full business case for a new station quarter in Peterborough was submitted to the Labour government in March.
The approval has unlocked nearly £48m in government funding towards the plans, which include a new western station entrance, pedestrianised square and multi-storey car park.
Paul Bristow, the Conservative mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said it was "fantastic news" for the city.
"We've got the green light and we now want to get building," he said.

Note that this concerns the access to and from the station, not tracks and platforms. It does include a new entrance/exit on the west side.

Hopefully the new buildings next to the station will have some retail units where you can get some decent food and a drink, trekking into the city centre along the existing pedestrian unfriendly routes whilst waiting for a connecting train isn’t the most pleasant experience.
looks like good news - Peterborough (station) is quite grotty.
As always, the devil is in the detail. I believe matching private sector funding is required.

Lots of toxic politics in Peterborough…

News story about the progress of this

The regeneration of Peterborough train station and surrounding area has taken a major step forward. The government's approval of the Full Business Case means upgrade work at Station Quarter could start within the next few months.

Pending the government’s forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review, £47.8 million in funding is set to be 'unlocked' to begin construction on the first phase of works, ‘City Link’, in late autumn this year.

Interesting graphic, with tracks not near the platform edges and an US style engine on a train. The realistic point is the vegetation growth between the tracks.

The BBC website now has more details on what is in the Peterborough station regeneration project.

With promises it will transform a city centre and unlock regeneration in the area, plans for a new "Station Quarter" in Peterborough have been endorsed by the government.

But five years since a bid for funding towards the £65m project was submitted, works have yet to begin. What does the project involve and why is it taking so long?
