They have a speed hold device which the driver has a choice of using or not. In any case, the fleet are currently limited to 109, mph through a soft limiter. But there are lots of places where non-tilting trains need to reduce speed. You wouldn't want to be doing 109mph through Atherstone for instance.I though the 80xs had speed set?
An experienced retired Avanti driver says that there are a lot of diagrams where the speed set might not be used because drivers will coast to dissipate time, especially where they know that they are approaching a junction - and they need to arrive at the junction at the right time to hit their slot through it. Using speed set might mean an early arrival and sitting at red signals.
Then again, some train operating companies encourage early running because under certain circumstances they may even be allowed ahead of their booked path.
