London Paddington to Oxford is done by HSTs terminating at Oxford sometimes, thats not too far in HST terms.

Frome to Westbury.

This question has come up before, and this was the definitive answer.

why do they do this run?
seems really short for a HST, if it comes in from Westbury too, why not just terminate at frome, is this due to it being single line , so "capacity" issues?

I can't understand what you're saying.

There is an evening peak service from Paddington to Frome worked by a HST. The HST then returns to Westbury, from where it can head empty stock to the depot in Bristol.

FGW do similar runs with other HST services. With the evening Frome set, its probably used to provide a connection for anyone going to London.

Other short services are a set working a Newton Abbot-Paignton after its come ECS from Laira on its way to forming a Paignton-Pad & theres a Paignton-Newton Abbot at night too off a Pad-Paignton before going ECS to Laira.

Correct me if im wrong, and not as short as the Frome to Westbury service, but in summer and when they do/have run up there, dosent XC's HSTs work a morning Plymouth to Newquay service?

In 1988 the 2105 Cheltenham - Gloucester on a Sunday was diagrammed a HST. (6.5 miles)

XC certainly in 2008 and 2009 ran Plymouth - Newquay with a HST very early.

Leaves Plymouth 0635; arrives Newquay 0827. There is also an FGW service at 0857, arriving 1055. The speed differential is interesting as only the XC journey serves Lostwithiel. (Data based on Summer 2011 timetable.)

You can indeed use it to get the 2108 to Paddington (the ex-Taunton which by-passes Frome) but also it does plug a bit of a gap too, since the previous Westbury is around an hour beforehand. Having done it twice, it's light loaded, but then shunting out 4-5 coaches at Westbury just to make it a short train at Frome is wasting time!
It is also First Class only too, standard ticket or not :D (unsure if it is normal operation but when I did twice, it was FC only)

Struggling to think of anything shorter now! The only other shortest working I can think of without passengers (ECS wise) is the 5C32 Exeter St Davids - Exeter New Yard at around 1am!

The FGW service has pathing constrains though as it has to pass the XC service going the other direction in the loop at Goonbarrow Junction whereas the XC service doesn't need to pass anything there and only needs to exchange tokens with the signaller. Passing services there takes longer so the FGW service takes slightly longer.

Are you sure? I thought there was a commuter only service between G-E? Was it not 2 services?

In the morning the HST ran Edinburgh - Glasgow QS about 7.30 or 8.00 then returned through Edinburgh to Kings Cross. The reverse happened in the evening with the train returning from Glasgow about 18.00.

So the the positioning move benefited commuters living in Edinburgh and working in Glasgow - used it myself a few times!

It continued to Kings Cross

..and sundays only at that!

Not much cop for commuters other than those with hang overs. I thought it was ECS craigentinny - GSQst.

Bit like the 0705 Ayr- Glasgow in them there days. Formed the "up" Royal Scot.

Sundays only - went to/from KX each day from memory.

With a journey of under 50 mins in those days it would be in QS before 8.50 so fine for a 9ish start in the many offices close to QS. Mind I was a 7.00 train man normally so I expect I did have a hangover on most occassions I got the 8.00!!

Not regular, but during flooding in June 2007 a HST operated a Leeds-Doncaster non stop (via Hambleton) shuttle service.
