    Thameslink/ Class 700 Progress

I was at Infrarail on Tuesday - Nick Gray from Network Rail (he's "principal programme sponsor for the Thameslink Programme") mentioned them briefly. He said the St Pancras installation is a first test of installing the hardware, but they're running an interim version of the software - the...

We've got the Key, it's no secret... (Smartcards on GTR)

I'm still waiting for GTR and AGA to link up their systems so I can have a smartcard season between Cambridge and Meldreth. AGA have launched their smartcard product in the last week or so, so it shouldn't be too far away...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Sorry - it was only after I posted that I realised I'd misread what you'd written. I'd thought you'd said there would be no direct Oxford-Bedford service at all, rather than no service via MK.

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

EWR's site shows a Bedford-Oxford service (calling at Bletchley but not MK) at 1tph, taking 61 minutes. It then shows a second MK-Oxford service, also 1tph, taking 41 minutes Both of these services may end up continuing to Reading.

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Not to mention the onward connections to WCML destinations - I can't see it being particularly attractive to change at Bletchley (via a longish walk from high level to low level platforms) to a local train for a one stop journey to MK in order to then connect onwards to an intercity service. The...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

Can I just pick up on various people saying that the "quickest way from Cambridge to the Thames Valley/Oxford will always be via London"? I'm not sure this is the case: The "direct" road from Cambridge to Oxford (via St Neots, Bedford and MK) is 85 miles. It's a car journey of at least two...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

I live in Cambridge, about ten minutes' walk from the (main) railway station. The area around the station is being massively rebuilt in order to provide a lot of new offices, shops, apartments and two hotels. The redevelopment has also included new arrangements for buses (although you have to...

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

And to follow up, the EWR study from 2014 points out that (perhaps surprisingly) Cambridge-Northampton is the top-ranked journey of 30-60 minutes, ranked way above Cambridge-Oxford. (see the report here table 5 on page 8)

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

A little historical diversion I hope will interest people... Back in 1846, the Eastern Counties Railway planned a railway line from Cambridge to Bedford via Shepreth, Biggleswade and Cardington, partly as a ploy to keep their rivals out of the region. They ran out of cash before they could...

GTR's Class 377/5s being allocated to their Great Northern route

I'd assumed that with GTR's contract being a management contract (i.e. the DfT is taking the farebox risk) they were told not to spend a penny more on marketing than necessary!

    Thameslink/ Class 700 Progress

Hello everyone, I'm new here :-) I commute between Cambridge and Meldreth. You're right about Foxton crossing, it's a source of a great deal of local antipathy. Especially since the branch to Barrington Quarry reopened and we now have freight trains shunting across the crossing at around 5pm...
