What to wear: Shunter/maintenance team member interview

Shirt, tie and trousers. You can buy a cheap pair of trousers at Primark so no excuse not to wear something smart in my opinion. I’ve never owned a suit in my life so never worn a suit to a job interview before, that of course doesn’t mean a suit wouldn’t be suitable.

GTR employee bids to visit all 2,580 GB railway stations in 6 weeks

That’s really fantastic! I assume you sit down in the evening looking at the days train times to work it out rather then sitting at a computer all day long tracking train movements?

Joining a union as a manager

We had a few managers at our place in ASLEF including an ex-rep. How ever, when the current industrial action started they all left. It was brought up at a branch meeting asking if they could attend, no one seemed sure whether or not they could. Personally I wouldn’t want managers attending...

Disc, voucher and meter parking zones

Saw these two years ago in Hexham. From memory the car park was split up into three separate coloured zones. We spent about 20 minutes reading the rules, think we eventually realised they didn’t apply on Sundays. They weren’t the most clear rules for out of towners, think if it was during the...

    CrossCountry Qualified Train Driver

I wasn’t slating anyone for working rest day work. More surprised that the availability of RDW is one of the chosen reasons people move depots. The four day week was always a big appeal for me joining the railways, I suppose some see that as a way to enjoy more time off whilst others see it as a...

    CrossCountry Qualified Train Driver

I understand that, that’s why I said sometimes life goes wrong, and people like yourselves truly have my sympathy. But there are still plenty at my place who will do every rest day going so they can have the nicest car in the car park, the biggest extension on their house next to the railway...

    CrossCountry Qualified Train Driver

Glad you asked this, I often wonder the same. I know different people have different circumstances and things go wrong in life, especially with the lack of pay rises in recent years. But when I joined the railway I was always told never to rely on rest day work, always budget to your basic wage...

Network Rail removes Islamic message on King's Cross display boards after fierce criticism

Plenty of people still consider Easter and Christmas as a religious festival, around 600,000 people. How ever, there are others who now consider that the religious holidays of Christmas and Easter as a time to spend together as a family. And strangely now, decorate their houses for Easter.

Does anyone know if the OPC have refreshed their tests?

I sat my tests twice, must have been about 12 months apart, but I sat the old tests the first time and the new tests the second time. Think I was the first group to sit the new tests. I can’t remember how they differed now, it was a long time ago, but I remember the new tests didn’t seem as...

Are there any train drivers earning £100k or more?

I hate those days too :lol:

Are there any train drivers earning £100k or more?

I did four days rest day work last year and hated every single one. This year I’ve done no ready day work and so don’t plan to do any. I still have a mortgage and children to support. I know one driver who would use his application days to book time off so he could maximise the amount of rest...

    Staff Vaping

I agree it looks unprofessional, how ever, it’s probably unreasonable to expect staff not to vape for a whole 9+ hour shift (should that be their thing). I can only think of two locations in my area where staff can vape/vape in staff only areas.

GTR employee bids to visit all 2,580 GB railway stations in 6 weeks

What on earth did you do for 15 minutes outside these stations in the middle of nowhere. 7 and half minutes walk up a country lane and back again? Out of interest do you know how many days it took you to achieve it? That’s some achievement.

Varamis Rail Given Operators Licence from ORR

Great to read, very exciting. Will be keeping an eye out to see if they do driver recruitment in the future.

    EMR assessment day

I’ve always worn trousers, shirt and tie when I’ve been an external candidate. Never owned a suit before and I’ve done alright at most my interviews.

    Preferential treatment for rail staff

Driver said no, there’s no need to moan about it on social media. Personally I don’t think he should be putting another driver in the position by asking in the first place. But each to there own. Comes across as slightly self entitled to go posting things on social media though.

Should "internal" Rail Industry logs be in the public domain?

Always think you’d be crackers to share a control log if you have access to them. People are desperate to show that they are the first to know something, more in the know then someone else or more railway then the next guy. Desperate for likes, whether it’s a thumbs up on social media or...

Toilet attendants in pubs and nightclubs.

Used to always buy a lolly from them for £1. Was always happy to pay it. Not seen one in the pubs or bars I frequent since before covid. Probably a sign of my age and the fact the village pubs don’t tend to have these sort of people.

    Service charges added to bills

Can think of a few pubs, that when buying a drink at the bar and paying by card the card machine comes up with “Add £x service charge, press green for yes, red for no”. Been happening probably since COVID restrictions ended. Bar staff quite often lean over and press cancel before you have the...

    Train strikes and trainee drivers.

RMT member at our place striked on both RMT and ASLEF strike days, until the point the strikes got to the level where he could not afford to strike on both days. Wouldn’t the only way to know for sure who’s in the union or not be to have the list of names from the union? And if so wouldn’t...
