    Is this normal?

Certainly is normal to do 6 day blocks at my TOC as the link has to average 35hrs over the cycle. Some weeks you will work fewer hours than 35hrs and others you will work more.

    Double yellow flashing aspects?

There is also an interesting somewhat non standard arrangement spacing Carstairs on the Down. Trains routed to the South curve and ultimately Edinburgh can receive the usual flashing yellows approach but trains can be routed to the Down Passenger Loop opposite the station with a steady YY...

    Double yellow flashing aspects?

No because there may be more than 1 diverging route at the junction. The lower speed turn outs would not be signalled using flashing aspects.

Drugs & Alcohol Testing during training.

Random unannounced D&A screening is a fact of life for safety critical staff on the railway. Doesn't matter if you've done 1 day or 40 years service you can be selected at any time.

WCML blocked at Carnforth 13/05/25, best travel options?

Hest Bank but trains are running again.

    LNER employment benefits

200 free tickets to give away sounds a lot to be honest but incredible if it's true. My company has a friend's and family tickets perk but it's capped at a lot less than 200 and it's not free! You will receive a "Priv" pass for which you can use to buy 75% discount tickets for leisure travel...

    Trainee Driver & Route Learning

Short answer would be yes and when you're qualified you'll get less time to learn new routes. As you haven't said where or who you work for it's impossible to give you a detailed answer based on your T&C's or Driver training standards but talk to your Instructor, union rep and management about...

Driving question - do you ever have to slow down on clear aspects due to signal spacing?

I'm referring to the signal on the left hand curve after the site of the former Brisco station (ie the one before the 20 warning board). I've had that signal showing green and the next one at Upperby Bridge showing YY countless times. Equally there's numerous times I've had YY at Brisco coming...

Driving question - do you ever have to slow down on clear aspects due to signal spacing?

I wonder if that's reserved for certain trains because when I approach Carlisle on the Down with the red protecting the station I am usually brought down on the normal green to red sequencing with the signal at Brisco showing green. More often than not these days we are signalled straight...

Overshoot at MKC - 9th May

That sounds more like the standard PTI check (open local door, step out etc) before releasing the doors rather than a specific instruction in the case of an overrun. I've never heard of crew being instructed to release individual doors that are still in the station with a T-key when a train has...

Free travel arrangements for staff on different TOCs.

Yes staff move under TUPE arrangements. On the surface my employer is exactly the same as it was when it was in private hands but legally speaking we moved to a new DfT company with a new legal name and the private company ceased to exist.

Major Engineering Work Planned at Clifton (Cumbria) to Replace WestCoast Mainline Bridge Over M6 - Jan 2026

While they're cleared for the S&C having been over it a few times, Preston and Glasgow crews don't sign 185s.

    Setting the DRA

Selecting Neutral also allows you to release the DSD without the setting the Vigilance alarm off and sending alerts to the Signaller. That was long before DRA and GSMR came into existence and some older hands I've worked with used to wrap the cab-to-cab phone cord around the brake handle if they...

    Setting the DRA

I used to to sign 350s. Setting the DRA on the move in a 350 knocked out the dynamic braking reverting it to disc brake. It didn't give a full service brake but it was noticeable release of the dynamic brake followed by the disc applying to whatever brake position you had applied.

Difference between a Train Driver Instructor and a Driver Mentor

I think it just depends where you work which title they choose to give to the instructor role. Some companies don't have the Assessor grade and all assessments would be done by management.

Free travel arrangements for staff on different TOCs.

It used to be after 4 weeks but it might have changed.

No, it means you get FIP after 12 months service.

    Uk headlights question..

Generally I don't have an issue with dazzling but class 68 and 88 locomotives are known for having bright lights.
  19. driver9000

    Uk headlights question..

Essentially yes although as far as I know there is nothing forcing an operator to change existing lighting to the new set up. The current standard is for twin headlights, markers and a roof height light which also allows an operator to do away with the yellow end if they wish. The new lighting...

    Night time route learning videos

Videos are intended to be an aid to route learning and not replace actually travelling over a route so night videos wouldn't really be of much benefit. I've never seen route learning videos filmed at night but you should make an effort to travel over a route you're learning during darkness.
