ECML South disruption - OLE down 09/12

I see 1D26 eventually terminated at Leeds. How does anyone wanting Keighley or Skipton get home at 2:19am? It would have been much simpler for the passengers if the train had continued to its destination, but I guess the railway is run for the convenience of the railway and the passengers are...

Aslef strikes and OT ban called…

That's my whole team at work shafted on 8 December for our Christmas meal out. I'd already started driving to work because I was fed up of Northern's lousy way of dealing with issues that cause disruption after paying £7.50 for the privilege of a journey I can make on £4.50 of petrol in half the...

Disastrous afternoon on the Airedale line this afternoon - 09 August

The conductor appeared to be waiting to board the train at Skipton as per usual. I always board this train at the back as it affords me the fastest exit onto Park Road at Bingley when I alight. The conductor change always takes place at the back of the train too so I’m used to seeing them.

Disastrous afternoon on the Airedale line this afternoon - 09 August

I turned up at Skipton station to travel to Bingley on the 16:59 departure to Leeds from Carlisle (2H93). It arrived on time but I was told I couldn't get on as it was cancelled and all the passengers were duly thrown off. It then departed on time, empty. A quick look on Real Time Trains...

Are there any male automated announcements on trains?

Yes, the Class 333s on thee Airedale Line have always had male automated onboard announcements. Pretty sure it's the same with the 331s too.

Worst Railway Journeys in the UK

Well, unsurprisingly I missed my connection at Plymouth. The silver lining is that I’m now on a GWR Castle HST. My connection would have been an IET. I’d forgotten just how beautifully these old MKIIIs ride!

Worst Railway Journeys in the UK

On the subject of Voyagers… currently sat on 1V52 - we’re taking my mum to Cornwall for her 80th birthday. Her succinct observation: “aren’t these trains funny, there are hardly any windows next to the seats”. Also, I’ve noted the borderline criminal lack of luggage space! 1687174360 It gets...

How off-putting is it to change trains in GB - from rail regulars via 'normals' to OAPs to foreign visitors?

For me, the issue with changing is that, if I'm on a long journey for which I've bought an advance purchase ticket with a reserved seat, and the first of my two trains is delayed to the extent that I miss my connection, then I'm facing the prospect of a later connection for which I don't have a...

Blackpool North customer service improved or same ?

Funnily enough I was wondering, just a few days ago, if Blackpool North still operated this abhorrent policy having experienced it myself in the early 2000s. I actually found a thread about it on here but it was closed to replies. Interesting to see a new thread on the topic and that things...

What would happen if the last train of the night was overcrowded?

I was wondering something similar recently... On one of the strike days there was a skeleton service running on the route I use to commute. There was one train left to run by the time I'd get to the station after work and it concerned me that if this train was full, given that there were very...

Poor quality passenger rail service increases demand for private car purchases

I've been a train enthusiast since I was a kid and I mostly enjoy rail travel. I'd got my annual car mileage down to about 300 and had hung onto my old car for ages (it's now 23 years old) figuring buying a new one would be tantamount to ordering new furniture for the cabins on the Titanic but...

What is the railway doing well currently?

What is the railway industry doing well currently? - Selling cars. - Driving the remaining dregs of high street trade to Amazon.

Watched a spectacular electrical storm on there one evening. Also, almost did a double take when I saw this a short while ago...

    GWR Pullman dining reinstated

This is something I've always fancied doing and will, at some point, when the steak returns. However, I do have a concern based on a review I read on Trip Advisor. Essentially, someone booked Pullman Dining and boarded the train in their seat reserved for travel. When the call came for dinner...

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

I did wonder if that was the case. I've been on various EMUs and on the London Underground and heard that distinctive "clonking" noise which coincides with the lights dimming and is clearly related to the power supply temporarily being lost. This, however, was so loud that it seemed strange that...

    Northern Class 331: Construction/Introduction Updates

I had an uneventful journey from Bingley to Leeds on 331109 (2H27 Skipton-Leeds) this morning. However, the initial phase of my return journey on 331105 (2H38 Leeds-Skipton) was characterised by some very disconcerting banging noises. It happened a few times as we left Leeds and got up to speed...

6A11 (Robeston Sidings - Theale Murco) on fire near Llanelli (27/08)

It certainly looks like the train is pointing the "wrong" way, so unless the original train was running on the "wrong" line, that's entirely possible.

6A11 (Robeston Sidings - Theale Murco) on fire near Llanelli (27/08)

When a petroleum train derailed in Summit Tunnel in 1984 the crew uncoupled 47125 and the first three wagons and drove them out. Regarding this incident, one of the pics on the BBC website appears to show a 66 with some wagons and the fire glowing in the distant background, so the same may have...

What incentive is there to go by train?

I went to Cornwall by train back in 2003 and 2004. First year I went direct and it cost a fortune. Next time I went via London and it only cost about half as much, thanks to both GNER (as it were) and FGW doing much better advance purchase deals than Virgin. Also, it meant my journey consisted...

What incentive is there to go by train?

Depends on the circumstances. If I want to get to Leeds on a weekend it's a 44 minute round trip on the train and a £6.20 return ticket. In the car it's a two to three hour round trip and £15+ in petrol and parking charges. If I worked in Leeds a season ticket would be £1,104 and, again, a 44...
