    Bristol Temple Meads works

I'm not sure Friary is the best place for a bus interchange. Would Bristol & Exeter Yard, the sunken area off the ramp where Hart's Bakery sits, not be preferable? There's direct access from the subway, or you could put a lift from the station forecourt. That way the buses, the taxis, and the...

    Eling Wharf Branch, Totton

Looks like the formation of the Eling Wharf Branch in Totton is going to be reused as a new pedestrian access to the down platform at Totton: https://www.advertiserandtimes.co.uk/news/disability-improvements-welcomed-at-forest-train-station-9357043/

    Miniature railway driving requirements.

I had to step back from driving at a standard gauge heritage railway when diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, due to the risks associated with hypoglycemia. After discussion with a GP, the railway agreed I could continue firing, provided I checked and logged my blood sugar levels at regular...

Stockton and Darlington 200th anniversary 27 September 2025

Personally I would favour rail 200 being as much about looking forward as looking back, showing how ancient pre-Victorian infrastructure can still play a major role in today's society. The creation of a rail heritage quarter at Darlington will have much longer-lasting benefits than any cavalcade.

Stockton and Darlington 200th anniversary 27 September 2025

This work is ongoing, which will hopefully raise the profile of North Road and give it the attraction Darlington deserves: https://www.willmottdixon.co.uk/projects/darlington-railway-heritage-quarter I don't think a cavalcade is likely, but some longer-lasting investment in the railway heritage...

    Bristol - Edale advice

Thanks all. Good to hear about the Crewe and New Mills options. Would the New Mills ticket be valid for travel via Derby & Sheffield on the way out, getting off at Edale? Thanks also for the National Express suggestion, but I'm keen to avoid bus travel.

    Bristol - Edale advice

Hi all I want to travel from Bristol to Edale for the weekend after next, travelling up Friday 19th and returning Sunday 21st. I can buy a variety of advance singles but would prefer the flexibility of an open return, and am keen to avoid replacement buses from Birmingham to Gloucester on...

    Bala Lake Needs you help

Most planning authorities will allow you a revised application for free if one has been rejected. Reading comments on the website, it looks like they need to address concerns by the highway authority as well as the points about phosphates, which seem to be a much broader issue.

Llandudno Junction - Newport 25 March

Took a trip up from Newport to Llandudno Junction on Friday using the Premier Service. Great food, £20 for three courses, and a seamless journey with friendly staff. Only three tables eating, a shame this service isn't promoted further. It was quite difficult to find info about it. Also a shame...

Swanage Railway announce 2023 Wareham service

None of the users of the Wareham-Swanage link will be familiar with the service, so a 20-30 minute connection is quite sensible. Don't forget that the users of the service may not be used to using trains. I imagine many will not be aware of the through ticket, so will need to buy an add-on for...

Swanage Railway announce 2023 Wareham service

My observations suggest that there is a 21-minute wait at Wareham between arriving from the East for the first train (1048) and the Swanage connection arriving (1109) - it departs 10 mins later. If you spend the maximum length of time in the Purbecks, the last train back arrives Wareham at 1710...

Swanage Railway announce 2023 Wareham service

As others have commented, the services are well-timed for a decent family day out from stations along the South Western Mainline. A mid-morning start from Southampton, Totton, Brockenhurst, New Milton, and stations through the Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole conurbation. These local-ish areas...

Llandudno Junction - Newport 25 March

Thanks mate, that’s super helpful. I could stomach 3.5hrs in a 175 but not a 150, so I’ll book one of those you suggest.

Llandudno Junction - Newport 25 March

Hi all Hopefully I am posting this in the right place. I'm going to treat the wife to a short break in Llandudno, travelling up from Newport during the week to take advantage of the loco-hauled set, and back on Saturday 25 March. I know the loco-hauled doesn't run at weekends, but if we were to...

    Planning permission for carriage?

Almost certainly is the answer. Unless the land in question is previously developed, and has the benefit of a B2 (general industrial) use class. If it hasn't and is in the green belt you've almost no chance.

Horton in Ribblesdale station to get footbridge, with lifts.

At the opposite end of England, Cornwall Council are currently assessing a planning application to replace the footbridge at St Erth Station. The station is Grade II listed and a classic GWR country junction but it's not possible to adapt the existing footbridge and a large new car park is...

Island Line Railway - current state and the future

Crap, inflexible service using antiquated rolling stock thus haemorrhaging passengers? Modern shiny buses seen as the future? Good job that this forum wasn't around in the '60s, most of the posters would be cheering Beeching's axe......

GWR Bristol Temple Meads to Weymouth - what a joke...

My office is in Bristol, but i regularly have to travel on business to Plymouth, Exeter, Dorchester and Poole. I always go by train to the former two and only once have (never again!) for the latter. If someone puts on a direct Bournemouth - Exeter train that would be very interesting though!

    Broad Gauge

Many years ago I remember reading of a proposal to relay the Cholsey and Wallingford as a preserved broad gauge line. I can't remember any more details though, or even if it was a serious proposal.

Solar Panels Ruining the Roofs of London's Train Stations?

Historic England (formerly English Heritage) has good guidance on the compatibility of solar panels with historic buildings. See https://content.historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/microgeneration-in-the-historic-environment/microgeneration.pdf/ Essentially solar panels are ok...
