    Sprinters on Manchester-south Wales

Are there any afternoon services that are more/less likely to be replaced by a sprinter at the moment? The context for this is that I need to book my mum on to a train, and because of her back problems I want to minimise the chance of it being a sprinter. Services in question are 1131, 1231 and...

Wick to Penzance in a day?

As mentioned above a very easy alternative available today is 1600 from Wick, 2045 sleeper from Inverness and then a leisure;y trip across London for either 0903 to Plymouth for a connection to Penzance or 1003 straight through.

Wick to Penzance in a day?

It seems to be easily possible even today using either of the relevant sleeper trains.

Are there any examples where an alternative route is taken if the service is delayed enough?

As happened this evening when a train broke down at Cathays.

Trivia: most inefficient direct train (time:distance)

Along similar lines, the 2138 from Merthyr is sometimes shown as to Bridgend and Radyr (the back two carriages split off at Cardiff Central) which makes a direct trip from Llandaf to Danescourt of 40 minutes. It's about a mile to walk.

Trivia: most inefficient direct train (time:distance)

If the 0608 from Rhymney counts as a through train (RTT says it is - it splits at Cardiff Central), then train takes 1 hr 10 mins from Ystrad Mynach to Abercynon, which is under 5 miles by road.

Trivia: Services that call at the same station twice

Rear portion of the 2138 from Merthyr Tydfil calls twice at Radyr. Technically I guess it's two trains (two different headcodes), but it's advertised on platforms on the Merthyr line as terminating at Radyr.

What locos are on the Valley Legend railtour today please? Thanks in advance.

Trivia - slowest express passenger train

On that basis, the 1451 from Cardiff to Treherbert will take some beating - 82 minutes for 23 miles. The point is more that it always struck me as odd that they use 1XXX headcodes for the Treherbert trains that take the City Line.

    Alf+Mansfield Parkway, Nottingham-Sheffield in 1970s

Re my previous post, there are a number of images on flickr of a 1544 from Nottingham to Blackpool in 1987, so that must have been what I was thinking of.

    Alf+Mansfield Parkway, Nottingham-Sheffield in 1970s

I think the Barrow-Nottingham train ran a bit longer than to 1985. I have recollections of travelling on a FO version that went via Derby (perhaps the 'via Derby' bit was FO?) when commuting from Derby to Chesterfield in 1987 that turned up any kind of traction in the summer such as 31/1...

Trivia: Stations with a specific service in one direction only

There is one direct train a day from Trefforest Estate to the Aberdare branch but no return. It's the first train that splits in Pontypridd for Merthyr and Aberdare.

Network test train in south Wales valleys

Basically I want to see the train (loco-hauled version) in the south Wales valleys. How often does it come down here, and is there a more efficient way of finding out its diagram other than repeatedly checking RTT? Thanks in advance.

    Which Treherbert diagrams are sprinters?

I realise the answer might be that that it is basically random from day to day, but are there any of the Cardiff Central to Treherbert diagrams that should definitely (subject to nothing untoward happening during the day) be sprinters rather than pacers? Thank you.

Yes, Hyphen, that's the one - thank you very much.

    Delay-reporting website

I recall seeing, a few months ago, a website that recorded details of delays (including providing average delay times etc) for any particular train over the previous month (or maybe more, or less, but certainly longer than Realtime Trains retains). But I can't remember what the website is...

    Bristol Parkway silliness

The 1812 was still there when we left; the Swansea train leaving first of the three wouldn't have affected either the XC train or the Weston train. 455driver - I can understand there are rules, but this just seems one of those bizarre cases when common sense isn't allowed to interfere.
