Hey all,

Just wondering, has anyone here done the 0710 Waterford to Dublin Heuston (only train booked via the Kilkenny avoider) and had any success with it?

I'm asking since I'm doing that next week, the only reason to go over this time, and I really hope it's not going to be a wasted trip!

Also, anyone know if it's booked a 3-car 22000 Class or 7-car 22000 Class 'Rotem'? The IrishRail booking engine suggests it's 3-cars but I know the 0905 (or something around that) last year from Waterford to Dublin Heuston was a 7-car one.

Finally, any mileage gen via the avoider? Looks around 3 miles less than via Kilkenny from a glance in the Baker.

Thanks in advance for any gen :)

3-coach when I used it on Monday 7 October. I was successful with the avoider and I suspect it must go that way most days because it would otherwise pick up quite a time penalty. The recently introduced stop at Newbridge was useful for picking up a connection westwards.

Loadings from Waterford were reasonable but there were still seats after the stop at Athy. The next one is a 6-coach (although the reformation of the units is now reported to be underway).

20.36 decimal miles Thomastown-Banagelstown via avoider.

Note that the 22000s are currently being reformed. In future they will come in 3 4 or 5 car versions, on occaision still multied up

There are no 7 car 22000s

Page 29 onwards here lists all mileage in the Irish Republic (note it is in decimal and not chain miles).

Just a quick query, when this service was first introduced a couple of years ago, I'm sure there was only one intermediate stop at Carlow. Obviously Newbridge was added only a few months ago but was Athy a call from the start or was that introduced intermediately?

Thanks for the gen all, didn't know about the reformations!

Hoping for good luck with it, although as already said it would lose a lot of time otherwise!

Athy was a stop earlier this year at least, can't remember what it was before.

The 07.10 ex Waterford was introduced on 8th June 2010.

Have checked back through the timetables:
08/06/2010+ Waterford 07.10, Carlow 08.06, Heuston 09.10
08/05/2011+ Waterford 07.10, Carlow 08.05, Athy 08.17, Heuston 09.10
20/01/2013+ Waterford 07.10, Carlow 07.59, Athy 08.12, Heuston 09.00
28/07/2013+ (current) Waterford 07.10, Carlow 07.59, Athy 08.12, Newbridge 08.34, Heuston 09.01
(All above times are departure times, except for Heuston timings).

Hope you have an enjoyable trip over the Lavistown Loop. Have never heard of this train not traversing it.

There are no 7 car 22000s

Correction - they are being formed into 3pce or 4pce set. The 15x6pce sets will loose two 'B' cars (226XX and 227XX judging from current experience) and placed into 22001-22030.

Possible formations are now - 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 cars (the last four for non-passenger service unless in emergency or for GAA specials)

I've got a photo of an 8pce (http://www.flickr.com/photos/95093559@N06/10479614566/) and 'The Wanderer' has caught a 7pce in traffic (http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/2013Photos/October-2013/i-qVbGKZ5/A)

As regards the 0710 Waterford - Heuston, generally was a 3pce but could be a 4pce or even 2x3pce - depends what's in Waterford and what needs to be moved up to Heuston/Laois Traincare/Anywhere else

Cheers for that, I'll be reporting back next Tuesday to confirm what happened :)

Big updates to my Irish fleet lists due soon then! Anything else I should be aware of changing? Guessing it's still 2700 Class on the Waterford to Limerick Junction route?

All the 2700s are withdrawn. I don't know what type of unit does Waterford-Limerick now

That sucks, wanted to get another go on the 2700s. Loved them little beasts, shame they're all gone, what will happen to them now? Might not be the best units for comfort, admittedly the 22000s are good for that, but nowhere near as much fun :(

Cool beans, shall keep an eye out for that :)

Final question for now: Any decent photographic/filming spots in the Waterford area? Got most of Monday to kill so need to find something cheap to do!

7.10 is scheduled for a 6 piece set except Mondays when its a 3 piece. It could be any set these days but nest week it will be a 4 or 6 car set. Usually arrives on time but timetable on route isn't perfect.

Quiet a few of the 22's in current size operate this as the last service to turn them into position to be changed at Portlaose.

You can film the whole yard in Waterford, either across the bridge on the city side or even just walk up the road outside the station, has all footpaths to view the yard close up. If you are around Monday morning 11.30 or Monday afternoon (probably dark by them) between 17.15-18.00 you will see freight movements in the station.

Also if you go to where hurricanemk1c has said just before 10 on Tuesday the North Wall-Ballina liner should be spotted at plt 10.

You will be happy to know that the 07.10 service has only being cancelled once since 20 Jan this year, that was in September when it broke down north of Thomastown and was then terminated in Kilkenny.

The IWT is booked through at 1000 dead.

There are no more High Capacity sets - 22044 was the last on the 0710 Waterford - Heuston, then 1020 Heuston - Portlaoise prior to being split up. Looks like it could be 4ICR or 6ICR PC

Yeah I know was referring to it as being 6 coaches usually 2 3 car sets and not just a full 6 but expect it will most likely be a 4 price.

Cheers very much guys, must have walked past that spot at Heuston, or not quite far enough, when I last there in early summer.

Good to have the freight gen, 201 Class to Ballina and 071s in Waterford? Will be dark by that time in the evening in Waterford, but might be lucky!

You could have 071 or 201's but the general norm on Waterford is 071's and a mix on Dublin-Ballina IWT.

Photos and all that coming in a few days :)
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Morning all,

Just to let you know, I'm on the 0710 Waterford to Dublin Heuston currently, just gone through Muine Bheag. We did indeed do the Kilkenny avoiding line, so I've now finally finished the IE mainline network, just preserved/freight lines and Lisburn to Antrim (NIR) to do in Ireland now :D

Was too dark for photos and it started raining not too long before the freight was due in Waterford, so gave up and ended up in the cinema watching Thor The Dark World (great film by the way) :D

For the record, 22032 is on this morning, dud from a Portarlington to Portlaoise trip last year, grr! HD video clip of the Kilkenny avoiding line got and will be uploaded at some point this week.

Finally for now, saw one of the reformed 22000s on Waterford Yard this morning, still too dark at the time to get a confirmed ID but looked like 22023, or 22033.

I'd hold on a bit before updating. Current situation is:

22221+22641+22421+22321 (entered service 14/10/13)
22222+22741+22422+22322 (entered service 14/10/13)
22223+22642+22423+22323 (entered service 29/10/13) (thanks to 89-763-733)
22224+22742+22424+22324 (entered service 23/10/13)
22225+22643+22425+22325 (entered service 21/10/13)
22226+22743+22426+22326 (entered service 17/10/13)
22227+22644+22427+22327 (entered service 02/11/13)
22228+22744+22428+22328 (entered service 04/11/13)
22229+22645+22429+22329 (entered service ??/10/13) - noted in service 30/10/13
22230+22745+22430+22330 (entered service 26/10/13)

22241+22541+22441+22341 (entered service 15/10/13) (thanks to 89-763-733)
22242+22542+22442+22342 (entered service 23/10/13)
22243+22543+22443+22343 (entered service 24/10/13)
22244+22544+22444+22345 (entered service 04/11/13)
22245+22545+22445+22345 (entered service 26/10/13)

Revised seating capacities:

3ICR - 190 seats
4ICR - 262 seats
4ICR PC - 36F/196S

I think that 631/731 will go into 22001/22002 respectively and so on, judging by the current reformations

Well 22006 already has the full logos - go figure!

I know one or two of the sets allowed up North were given the full logo from the start, if they are converting sets 1 to 4 into 4's then they should finish it. Surly it would make more sense not to convert the sets that can go across the border? Not that they will anytime soon.

I don't think it'll make any difference. They aren't cleared to go north of the border offically yet (hence 29000's on Enterprises)

22032 has entered the depot for conversion - the end is nigh for the Premier Class sets as well
