If a TOC was to run an IET at 10 Carriages without joining up 2 5 car units has anyone any idea how long would it be?

So you’d have just the 2 driving ends and 8 carriages

cheers

*Not sure if this should be in speculative ideas so move if needed.

Excepting the shorter units being built for the Midland Mainline, all the carriages are nominally 26m long. On that basis, a 10-car unit would be roughly 260m long, just like a pair of 5-car units.

But with slightly more seats

I think on Pendolinos the end cars are a bit longer, which probably only works because the nose is tapered so doesn't stick out as far on curves as a square end would. Is the same true of 80x?

That's probably true with IET's as well given the tapered ends and couplings.

Indeed it is, IET driving cars are 25.45 metres long and intermediate vehicles are 25.0 metres long - Measured over the body ends excluding corridor connections between carriages. It's pretty typical for most modern multiple units to have longer driving vehicles these days, especially long distance ones.

But in that instance, and excluding the length of corridor connections, we're looking at less than a metre's difference between a 2x5 and a 10.

Quite right, and once you throw in the corridor connections the difference in train length end to end really is absolutely minimal.

Driving vehicle length over couplings is less than 'over nose cone' length, thus making 2x5 coupled less than twice the five car unit length.
