Between the class 40/47 mk2c Aberdeen to Glasgow and the class 47/7 mk3 formations was there a class 47/4 mk2d formation?
If there was what was the typical formation? If not what was the typical formation for mk2c sets circa 1983 to 84?

Whilst I don't personally recall Mk2c sets on this route (although they may well have been) Mk2d sets did certainly feature.

The accident report (https://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/DoT_Nairns1982.pdf) into the 1982 Forteviot level crossing collision/derailment gives the formation of the train (1335 Glasgow QS to Aberdeen) as:
Class 47/4 loco
Mark 2A BSO
Mark 2E FO
Mark 2D TSOT
Mark 2D TSO
Mark 2D TSO
Mark 2D TSO
Mark 2D TSO

1980/81 all sets Mk2 Vacuum Braked stock - likewise Glasgow/Edinburgh to inverness with Mk1s on Inverness / Aberdeen
no trace of 81/82 marshalling book.
1982 and 1983 marshalling books shows the above as the standard formation - Mk2A BSO and the rest Mk2D or E - other than the one Mk3 set with DBSO. In the same era Glasgow/ Edinburgh to Inverness was transitioning from Mk2 VB to Mk2 a/b/c, and Inverness / Aberdeen then a mix of Mk1 & Mk2 VB stock.

Glasgow-Aberdeen broadly went:

From late-50s - Mk1, sets were load limited from May 1962 for the accelerated 3-hour schedules on two workings each way.

From 1977 - Mk2Z/Mk1 (Mk1 usually just the buffet car/full brake but some TSOs/BSK etc did appear at times)

From 1980 - Mk2Z + one Mk3A push-pull set (Mk3 set made available through adjusting the E&G set diagrams)

From May 1982 nominally (older stock continued to appear through the year) - three Mk2D/E + one Mk3A push-pull set. The Mk2 sets had a non-air-con Mk2 brake vehicle in the formation.

From May 1984 - timing load reduced one coach for accelerated schedules. (Track improvements coupled with the load restrictions enabled an overall cut of 8 mins.)

From May 1985 - three Mk2D/E push-pull sets + one Mk3A push-pull set. Glasgow to Aberdeen now fully push-pull worked.

There were some slight changes to set formations within those periods. For instance - the initial Mk2 air-con push-pull sets had a Mk BG in formation, five were painted in the new ScotRail livery, these were withdrawn from sets the following year.
