I noticed that this service was sitting in the up passenger loop at Dalmeny this morning, and on checking Real Time Trains, found that this is a scheduled delay of 18 minutes to allow a following service to overtake. This seems to be an extraordinarily long time to hold a service and I was wondering if any one might like to comment on s is necessary, when this service could easily reach its destination in this time.

It's the Royal Scotsman, not a public service, timed for 60mph (though can do 75) and cannot use the higher HST speeds over most of the Dundee to Edinburgh line, it genuinely will hold things up - 20mph instead of 50 over the Forth Bridge for example.
