I've been on this train from Newark, and would like to know which funny little diversion we've gone down between Doncaster and York

You go up the Grand Central line towards Bradford Interchange, before diverting outside Knottingley, onto the Dearne Valley line, before up to York via Sherburn-in-Elmlet and Church Fenton :P

Yes, it is the regular booked route, and it's for route knowledge reasons.

The route knowledge has been required recently due to engineering works on the main line although when the engineering work has been south of Shaftholme Junction, trains have had to go via Leeds instead (see EC diversions via the Askern Line, Class 67 on 1S04 and 1E05, Doncaster to York - Saturday Night).

The 2330 to Leeds takes an equally interesting way to Leeds for the purpose or route knowledge retention. See here after Doncaster.

Out of interest, is the route via Gainsborough LR and Lincoln still retained for diversions? I remember many years ago just after privatisation it was used frequently, but haven't seen it used for some time.

Wouldn't that be the northern half of the Joint line diversions? If so it must still be quite common, often 4-5 times a year there are diversions between Peterborough and the North via Sleaford and Lincoln.

Doesn't the empty stock off the HST to Lincoln return via Gainsborough and Doncaster to get back to NL?

It is still retained, yes. MSX, the morning ECS goes that way, as does the evening ECS on a frequent basis...
