If they have time to paint them, they should have painted them into base Northern livery to minimise the time they’ll be out of service when they arrive there mid next year.

323221 is one of those not going to Northern.

Now this I can't wait to see! Best livery the 323s have carried in my opinion and it will be great to see it back.

They aren’t all going to Northern.
I know you know I’m already well aware of that, but the point is if they haven’t chosen to take the ones due for Northern out of service for a repaint first (bearing in mind it’ll take a while to do them all) into Northern livery (as EMR did with 156s), instead preferring to do promotional “frother” stunts like this, then more fool them.

That looks excellent! I think its a nice nod to them. They've served the area well over the last 30 odd years!

The unit in question didn’t have Paint and body work repairs back when the WMR livery was applied as was in BTP livery.

This must of been done while the unit was receiving said repairs.

Thank you for the information. I’ll be interested to see if 221 does end up with Northern.

Quoted from the ‘WMR 323 visit(s) to Longsight’ thread(Post #43)

Transfer to Northern (17 units): 323202/203/205-213/217-219/241-243
- Off-lease (9 units): 323201/204/214-216/220-222/240

That was an easy debate to settle!

Besides, it's not guaranteed that the WMR->Northern 323s will be getting a full repaint.

Nothing wrong with a frivolous new coat.

The off-lease ones destined for scrap?

That looks great! I assume it will also be getting the Centro logos? I also hope they have painted the headlights black - as they were before the 2008/9 refurbishment.

Ultimately yes, unless something unexpected happens such as an increase in the numbers Northern can make use of- which would of course be subject to DfT approval. The way things are looking financially, there's probably just as much of a chance of TPE introducing loco-hauled 442s though!

(Let's see if that bypasses anyone's sarcasm filter...)

There was a suggestion that the Bolton-Wigan electrification scheme would need around 9 3-car EMUs. Nothing confirmed, though.

They might yet go to northern as they've purchased manchester International depot at longsight that'll house nine emus.

I heard something about the purchase, is that generally just for storing the 323s or Northern EMUs in general?

323221 was the only one of the 26 with WMR not to receive paint/bodywork during its refurb, hence why it was chosen to receive the livery.

I'd not even describe it as frivolous personally - the late 1980s and early 1990s were a watershed moment for provincial interurban operations when the local governments finally got in on the act of sponsoring key local rail services which had been provided grudgingly or not at all by BR.

30 years later one of the most visible physical manifestations of that, the 323 EMU on the electrified Cross City line is coming to the end of it's time in service there and if you've got a train that happens to need a repaint at an inconvenient time in it's service life you may as well do something to commemorate it!

In the 1990s the Centro public transport operation in the West Midlands County was nothing short of revolutionary compared to what had gone before.
