Ahh yes, you are correct, the painted image had it obscured by the tail light.

Perhaps the high density headlights are brighter than the ones in the headcode boxes? It's a cleaner appearance, though l prefer it's original look. Each to our own preferences. Glad 099 is on it's way back to service, it's come a long way from preservation days.

I have to say that I think the 37s look nicer like that than with split headcodes.

Most enthusiasts that have been around for a while prefer the unmolested split headcode look as it's more original and authentic.

Am I mistaken or were some 37s originally built without the split panels? I don’t mind the split headcode, don’t get me wrong, but as headcode boxes are redundant these days I just find it a bit odd.

And anyone who has been around for a while ought really to be grateful that we still have Class 37s running on the mainline, regardless of peripheral items like headcode boxes.

Yes, plenty of 37s had centre headcode panels from new.

If 37s are your bag then yes I agree. Not a huge fan myself but I certainly prefer them to modern junk like 66s.

Controversial view that. Peaks and 37s look the business with split headcodes. Has the full 70s nostalgia hit
Why did they remove the split headcode boxes from 37 099? Maybe it's something to do with getting rid of the gangway doors at the same time to save weight.

More to do with rusting. The headcode boxes are a known problem area for corrosion.

I’ve just been sent this by a friend (I’m not sure who took the photo but credits to them) and by the looks of it 37099 looks pretty much ready.

Thanks for the info, I had a feeling that was the case but wasn’t sure!

I agree - however, the 37s seem to have a massive following by railway enthusiasts (assume it’s the sound?) but I would take a 47 or 56 every day!

People claimed 37099 went back with 116 and 421 on 0D13 on Friday. It was fake gen but people are definitely thinking it's coming soon.

099 was out on 1255 0Z37 Rectory Jct to Rectory Jct via Allington West today in the company of 56301, one working in either direction?

** Both out together again today (Thursday) on the earlier 0755 0Z37

It has been noted that 099 does not currently wear it's 'Merl Evans' nameplates

56087 long term stopped. 97301 (former 37100) for salvage and presumably to be scrapped down the line.
