That somebody wouldn’t be based in the West Country and have a track record of how do I put this, starting things and not finishing them? I’m thinking of a certain J39 project amongst others.
The name given is a Paul Johnson. Not familiar to me but I don’t tend to know many figures by name in the railway industry.

Is 45015's husk in any fit state to be preserved? Even as a cautionary tale?
But why would you do it ? It is not as if the loco was irreplaceable because 45041 and 45060 still cater for the steam heat variant. The most important point is that 45015 would have been restored with class 47 innards, which would be fair enough for the Sulzer 12LDA28 power unit, but certainly not for all the electricals where Brush would have to replace Crompton Parkinson kit. It would have bene more authentic to restore it as 46057.

No cut it, and farm the remaining parts out to the Peak pres guys, and scrap the rest.

Whilst not remotely non existent, 47 parts are becoming scarcer in recent years as its a while since high volumes of the survivors were scrapped and those few companies/owners who do have small fleets (or any loco) along with a desire to keep them running are not going to want to hand over parts for preservationists of any sort (never mind basket case ideas involving locos that have spent more of their existence as something resembling scrap metal such as this infamous 45/0).

Simply as a cautionary tale to those in the preservation sector :D

I’ll concede that I am being very cynical here. In no way do I intend to make a serious case for preserving it - even as a display.

An update has been posted on the wnxx news site, apparently it is to be cut up offsite now and has been moved along the siding towards Shackerstone.

Thats fine. IMHO it should never have been bought from EWS except as scrap.

I'd quite like to buy it to keep pigeons in, but it wouldn't fit in my garden...

I read about this a while back, it was supposedly moved early December up the sidings.
I've seen some recent photos, looks more like a nature reserve to me inside- nice clean job on the number panel flame cuts as well.
Also heard the bogies have been sold and there is a cab on offer before the torch goes fully to work.

I cannot agree more. Enough of those posts, and the 45015 posts. The sooner those memes are confined to the bin the better.
Unfortunately not. 90050 still exists!

somebody has now started a campaign to preserve 45015. You have to admire the optimism, but surely if it was going to happen, it would have happened already given its ’celebrity’ status

The only thing celebrity about its status is it was the only 45 to make it into privatisation. Its continued use as an internet meme bore only from the long standing joke about its preserved status and it's need to be put out of its misery long ago

I thin so. According to post 102 it was bought from EWS, so reached privatisation. Did any others? (Did you read 'preservation' in error?)
Did he mean it was the only class 45 built with nose doors (D11-D15) which survived the axe ?

There are other 45/0s in preservation like 45041 and 45060

No, I meant privatisation. It had been dumped in Toton for so long it ended up on EWS books, the only dinosaur to do so.

25083 at Crewe also ended up on EWS’s books at the same time.
I think it's still with us at the Caledonian Railway who were well on the way to having it hauling trains again. That was some while ago and I've lost touch with what's happened to it since.

That's the loco involved in the terrible collision at Invergowrie on 22nd October 1979, which cost five lives....although not the loco, or its driver's fault - despite it having failed.

Blimey, didn't know that!
That's news to me too!

With 25083 being a genuine EWS loco would it qualify for a "what if" repaint into red and yellow?
Ooof, now you've got the imagination working overtime! lol ;)

If nothing else, that's a intriguing 'what-if' repainting concept, much like the BR Blue 14 & Loadhaul 50; we of course can't forget about 31466 (one of only 2 31s in EWS livery if I'm not mistaken?). Perhaps one for those skilled at Photoshop and fictitious livery/loco combos to have a crack at?

Did you not know? :D It’s a bit complicated but I think the basic story is it went on loan to Crewe Heritage Centre when it opened in the late 80’s, BR recalled it some time in the early 90s and come privatisation it ended up with EWS (I’m sure someone can pull me apart on this and add more details)
Regarding the red 31’s I believe 31255 was used as a test bed for when the new paint shop (the Cathedral?) was built by EWS at Toton, 31466 is the other one in EWS red and yellow, I believe that and 33030 were repainted at the request of Rail magazine just before the open day in
1998.

Had absolutely no idea until you mentioned it. ;) Certainly an interesting chain of events at any rate!

31255 does ring a distant bell in regards to being used as a testbed of some description for a new paintshop (no idea what it was called) at Toton, though am sure someone with the correct info will set us both straight. What I am fairly certain of however is that 255 didn't see any front-line service after repainting, while 466 was one of the last 31s in service with EWS when they finally dispensed with the type's services in early 2001.

Now that you mention it, 33030 was repainted at Allerton T&RS Depot for the 1998 Toton Open Day as you say; it only saw a few months use in it's traditional area after this before all of EWS' remaining 33s were put into storage at the end of that year (linked images from the Doug Birmingham & Chris Morrison Flickr streams respectively).

It would later be one of a pair of 33s that would be transferred to Aberdeen in September 1999 for use in/around the city (Civil Engineer's Dutch-liveried 33025 was the other one) on shunting, trip & infrastructure workings; maintenance was undertaken in Motherwell with the 2 locos hitching a ride to and fro on revenue freight workings to enable this (linked image from the Jim Ramsey Flickr stream). They didn't last too long in this role however, both having fallen out of use by the end of January 2001 (030 had caught fire at Kennethmont while at the head of the 6A11 Huntly - Aberdeen trip working on January 16th). Both would eventually leave Motherwell in February 2002 after being sold to DRS.

One of my mates was in the right place at the right time when it dropped onto the Sleepers at Aberdeen!
