Ive been reading a book recently entitled 'Railway Ghosts & Phanthoms', I dont know how many people beleive in this kind of stuff but, there was a chapter in this book about 47299 (originally 47216) that was involved in an accident at wrawby junction. The story said that this was the final act of a curse that had followed the loco since i was built. Is there anymore information on this? Or does someone have any opinoins?

47216 was renumbered to 47299 after a clairvoyant, who the police apparently took seriously, said it would be involved in a serious accident. Despite the renumbering, the loco was, a year or two later, involved in the fatal accident at Wrawby Junction which you have mentioned. Coincidence or otherwise? :-?

Was that the one that someone had a dream about it having an accident? I am sure I have read the story myself, it is strange how co-incidences happen. Look at 91023 which has also had 3 strikes (Sandy, Hatfield and Great Heck). It should have been renumbered 91123 but is now 91132. I understand this is out of respect to the victims of Great Heck (but this could just be a rumour).

To me in both cases they are just metal boxes so don't think they are cursed, but I would not be surprised to see such a story about that loco in a few years time!

I was under the impression the number was changed because some drivers wouldn't drive it. I may be wrong.

Anything is possible, but what is a number? If the loco is cursed it is cursed no matter what number it has on it so surely they wouldn't drive 91132 either? I suppose you could say it is a lucky loco as it has survived 3 times. (although the driver was in the DVT for Heck they were in the loco for the other 2.)

Although not a Class 47, wasn't there a serious accident with a Class 33 (33115) after it was involved with a collision with a track maintenence crane between Hilsea & Fratton, on 25th Febuary 1979, it was seriously damaged but returned to service months later, but an off-duty guard travelling in the cab was killed. I wonder if it had any spooky stuff happening after it re-entered service?

If 33115 was cursed in any way, the Railway Technical Centre at Derby were obviously unaware of it, as it was converted to departmental use in 1989.

Not every train driver is interested in numbers, but they could still feel it is cursed and the only indentification for a given loco is the number, so it might not fool them all, but some might never know it is the same loco.

A greater respect to them would be to name it maybe?

Thats right, wasn't they using they using that in the testing of the Eurostar units and it was semi-permanently coupled to a Class 73. It was also classed as a DVT (Class 83?) due to some changes with somthing.

Also the TGS and last 2 TSO's of the HST involved in the Southall Accident where the last 3 coaches of the HST involved in the Ladbroke Grove crash.

Looking at a few of the incedents discribed above, they are either very unfortunate coincidences, or somthing much more spooky is afoot does anyone have any more examples of tales theyve heard??? All opinions are respected and noted and I would like to thank all for thier input.

Unfortunate coincidences. Most of the time when there's a major incident the vehicles haven't been involved in one before- but that doesn't seem odd to us. Human brains are fantastic at picking up meaningless patterns from random noise.

Isn't the human brain a wonderful thing. When presented with a sheet of random numbers a person will immediately start to see patterns and doubt the true randomness of the numbers. Likewise you can toss a coin ten times and it land the same way up every single time, but this is still a random process.

There is absolutely no reason why one item of stock shouldn't be involved in more than one major accident. In the case of 91132 it is one of a pool of just 31 locos, so the odds are quite good that any individual asset from within that pool would have more than one spill.

While respecting people's rights to believe whatever they wish, I just can't bring myself to believe in curses and "lucky" locos/units. It's a good story right enough but that alone doesn't make it any more believeable, just like the tales woven around the "Curse" of Tutankhamun.

....Or the curse of James Dean's Spyder.

For those who don't know the tale, James Dean died when the Porsche Spyder he was driving crashed in 1955 (one of only 90 in existance at the time). A car costumizer bought the wreck but whilst it was being unloaded at his garage it fell on a mechanic breaking both his legs.

Parts of the car were used in two other Spyders in a race at the Pamona fair grounds in 1956, both of the cars crashed, one killing the driver, the other driver survived with serious injuries. After the race a kid trying to steal the stearing wheel injured his arm.

Two tyres from Dean's Spyder were sold to a young man, whose car nearly crashed within a week, after the two tyres blew out simutaneously.

The wrecked car was loaned to California Highway Patrol to illustrate the importance of safety on the road. Within days the garage where the Spyder was housed burnt down, every car except the Spyder was destroyed.

When it finally went on display in Sacramento it fell off it's stand and broke a kids hip.

When the car customizer was transporting the wreck on the back of a flatbed truck, it was involved in another accident, the man was thrown from the cab and the Spyder landed on him, killing him.

In 1960, on it's way back from an exhibition in Miami the car and the truck hauling it disappeared, never to be seen again, alledgedly.

Co-incidence or curse?
