Depends on what you mean by better and easier
Not sure how easy it is to get a Signaller job! I’ve just been through the process and it was 7 steps/stages all in all and I believe there were over 300 applicants for 30 ish positions. I imagine a driver recruitment process would be slightly different but also very tough, maybe tougher.

Is a signaller job :

1) better than driver?
2) easier to get?
I'm a driver . I had 17 combined test's and interviews . Some test's have to be used by all companies and some are extra , that are used by some companies and not others . Also I believe there were 6 thousand applicant's for the 40 odd position's on my intake. There was a recruitment drive once for trainee driver's for virgin and they had 15000 applicant's for 78 position's. As for which job is best , that's a personal opinion and both job's will have their merit's .

Each has its own stress points, pros and cons.

I’d say a driver job is harder to get, but harder to keep.

Signaller jobs are becoming the next best, especially the higher grade jobs as people look for weak spots into the industry at a decent salary point outside driver.

You’ll be swimming in overtime as a signaller, driver yes - but not as much or as constant.

Is there not a 60 hr/week limit looking to be introduced?? Seems like 60 hrs a week would be a lot for such a safety critical role anyway mind you.

I don't think it becomes official until 2021, although some routes are already recruiting extra staff in anticipation.

What sort of uplift on basic salary would you say you get from overtime and shift allowance etc in percentage terms?

Grade 5/6 - basics 40kish (including allowances)
With OT and sundays someone I know 70k average 60-65k

grade 8/9 48-50ish k with allowances
(been known for people to earn 85-95 with sundays and OT)

both require a fair bit of OT mind...

You can work 6 x12hrs on the bounce, then another 6, than another 6 been there done it!

Wasn’t to bad to be honest, the worst bit was the deductions on my payslip !

Been and gone.
Any further news on training courses being cancelled?
One class that is nearly finished is working continuously with longer sessions and right through next weekend to compress the last 2 weeks into under 10 days. After that I understand all IST will be cancelled. Other internal training course are now suspended too.

That's sensible given the circumstances. Do you think those of us waiting on start dates will be put on hold until the restrictions are lifted or is there a real possibility that our offers will be withdrawn?

Makes sense until we are in a safer position I guess. Hopefully our course will just be postponed and not cancelled in full!

I have been invited to do an online assesment for signaller. What sort of answers should I concentrate on?
E.g. safety first

Hi, looking for advice if possible.
Applied for a job as a signaller on 17th of March and received an email on the 18th of March saying my application was received and under review. Had a nosey at my account today and it says I've been invited to test. I've not had an email update stating this and there is no link the test. Is this normal? Will they send me a link to the test shortly? :) Thanks

Yes, I think mine was the same in January. I applied on the Saturday, had the acknowledgment on the Monday and got tests on the Weds.

I suspect you will receive an email just after 10am tomorrow with the link to the tests. I applied for a number of signaller jobs over a few months and I noticed that the automatic emails tend to be sent just after 10am, 2pm and 4pm daily.

Just got a call from recruitment and got a start date for signalling school in September. I asked if the date given would be a definite as training courses could be cancelled etc and can I certainly give my notice in to my current employer. I was told that NR will honour this start date even if training is cancelled or later than that date. I was told that I will receive this in writing and my employment with NR will commence on the date given to me. I am over the moon to say the least, the training school is in my local city which is another bonus. I just wanted to let people know this good news as it seems NR are honouring start dates and not withdrawing them.
