I have an interview to be a signallar for Network Rail and I was hoping I could get some answers to specific questions I have.

I understand the general role of a signallar but was wondering if anyone could help me with some specifics.

What is the main area where a signallar would work and what sort of system would be used in modern signalling?

If possible, what sort of activities will take place during the interview, is there anything I should be prepared for or research specifically?

What are some areas of signalling which are crucial to the role?

What is the role of a signallar when there are delays or cancellation?

Finally, what should a signallar do when two trains want to go on the same track?

Ps. I have been reading through the threads and have found some very useful information. These are just some questions I would appreciate if someone could help answer, no hate please

Firstly it is is signaller, be sure to get the wording right!

What location and grade is your interview for? This will have a major bearing on the answers to some of your questions. Hopefully some answers are obviously - if two trains "want to go on the same track" one will have to wait and be regulated accordingly.

Sorry my auto correct for some reason does this, it's really annoying. It is more specifically for Chester Railway Station as a trainee Signaller, so it will start as a grade 2. If you have any information in regards to the first question I had that would be great.

Got my start date and employee number today. Excited to get started now. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread it was a huge help!

I had my interview last Thursday and got the successful call on Tuesday. Absolutely made up it still hasn't sunk in.

I'm going to be G2 and can apply for boxes in the Wrexham area when I have passed IST.

I've been given a provisional start date and i'm off to Bristol for IST next year once things get confirmed. For IST is it exactly 10 weeks from your first day? So if for example you started on Monday January 1st 2024 you would finish on Friday 8th March 2024? Also for anyone that has studied over easter is there a break?
I've seen some of your post and it looks like you have an interview for the same grade as me in Chester. Is there any advice you could give me for this, also any idea as to what kind of assessment activities I can expect? Are there any resources which you used that you found very helpful?

I wouldn't worry about specific questions like that beyond knowing that the role of a signaller is to control the movement of trains . At interview they won't expect you to know about the various different types of systems in use to control signalling equipment , there are various different arrangements anyway from lever frames to OCS or NX panels to the various different types of computerised interfaces .

At the interview they will be more interested in establishing that you have the right non technical skills to become a proficient signaller . So that will be establishing that you have experience of successfully dealing with emergencies , following rules , working with others , communicating , ability to learn , attention management . That kind of thing . Use examples of times you have had to put those skills into use in your current/previous empoyments , education , training or other aspects of your life.

Thank sounds great. I hope its okay for me to ask you, what kind of activities should I be expecting to do?

There is no assessment activities other than a face to face interview. Mine was about 45 minutes maybe a little bit less it went so quick. You will have 2 people interviewing you one usually takes the notes and one usually asks the questions. Learn what you can about Signallers, the STAR method and also research the company, reading through this thread page after page helped me learn as much knowledge as possible and helped me massively in the interview. They are not going to ask complex questions about the role as you don't know anything yet so don't worry about that. It will be 'name a time when you have gone above and beyond at work' or 'name me a time when you had a difficult situation and how did you cope with it' Then after those questions there is an activity that you need to complete asking what you would do in a situation that they give you. Good luck!

You should learn the Network Rail Safety Vision, that’s crucial. Every answer you give should put safety first.

Good Evening all,

First time of anything like this. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Question:

I have passed my online assessment and I am awaiting assessment centre dates. Any idea on how long I will have to wait?

Thanks

I never redone a question, but from what I read it's you can record 2 time and you get the choice, but the way I see it, is it said it will show you re-recoreded and could point to hesitation (just my opinion) so I opted to stick with my first recording, says I passed and waiting on interview dates now, so it worked for me.

Can't stand watching myself talking to myself haha, but I powered through, always been the same with video interviews aswell, I prefer face to face

I agree, you never know what goes on behind the scenes. Best of luck !

Thank you, I appreciate the support and help. If it's okay to ask one final question. When you say the activity involves asking what I would do in this situation, does this refer to something that would actually happen on the railway (a real signaller scenario) or will this be a general 'what would you do in this situation' question (referring to something that would happen outside of signalling)? Thanks again.

Yeah a real signaller scenario. They give you the information though and you just answer with what you would do in that situation.

okay cool, thank you. I'll have a good look through this thread to make sure I am fully prepared for the interview. As you mentioned before, I won't really know anything yet being an interview. I'm assuming all the information I need to answer the situation based activity question will be available either on the Network Rail website or on here.

Just the base location on the advert. For some relief jobs it's physically impossible to live within 50 mins of all of the covered boxes!

Thanks for that, also my application says assessment centre/reviewing application? Am I likely to get a date for assessment or will they wait for the date of last applications to pass?

I’m confused as I’m at stage three way waiting outcome of the video interview, some information suggests if your successful you’ll go straight to the formal face to face interview, but others say it’s as I’ve described it above.

Any help it gratefully appreciated

Mine was similar, but the assessment centre was the face to face interview. No actual assessment centre.

And I've got mine after being a reserve candidate for 6 months.

Lovely, so Potentially if I’m successful at the pre recorded video interview I could be called for a face to face interview.

Slightly less nerve racking then ! I hate exams and the pressure of it all.

Yes potentially, mine was last year between April and June. Pretty sure it hasn't changed since then.

Yeah, I'm the same, I was dreading it. And relieved when I was told a face to face interview.

Thanks

Well done on passing the online assessment. Did they make you use a webcam and microphone, to remotely check you were doing it honestly?

You can not take test unless you have a microphone and webcam so they monitor you at all times.

They don't live monitor you, but the recording are sent to be analysed to make sure it's the same person and no one can be heard helping

I’m sure I read on the pre test information you could refuse permission and still take the tests, but…..expect a very close look to be taken at your results and potentially expect your application to be terminated - so accept or don’t bother which to ensure all is fair is well fair enough.

After i did my scenario on the video it was straight to face to face interview couple years ago then it all follows up on that list, there wasn’t no assessment centre in person

The signaller interview process is always evolving, the way it was two years ago is probably not how it is today. Four years ago there was no video interviews, it was all in person.

Does anyone have any idea of what the situational assessment activity consist of after the interview? What kind of situational question do they tend of ask you as a g2 trainee? Is it related to the role of a signaller or does it have to do with non technical skills? any help of this area of the interview would be appreciated.

Looking at the compendium, they are open continuously Monday to Sunday 0600, shut for a short period 0600 - 0930 on Sundays and then reopening 0930 throughout until the next Sunday.

Good afternoon. Any grade 2 signaller on here could help me? Finally been offered a job after almost 10 years. Taking it as this has been a long term ambition of mine. Could someone help me with what the pay would be after adding on shift, weekend etc. 12 hour shifts it would be. I currently make more and need to convince the other half that the pay on show is before shift pay etc. Thanks in advance

So with 12 hour shifts, half your shifts being nights and working 2 out of every 4 Sundays the yearly wage is over £43k before tax, ni and person. Wage every 4 weeks works out between £3400 and £3500 before tax & NI and pension.
