Theres a few of us on here then,

Badge3226 - I've been successful for grade 7 Thames Valley Signalling Centre, How about yourself mate?

Cagey - Great news I can't wait now!

LimeStSte- Cool, what box have you been successful for? If you don't mind me asking.

Has anyone been told yet what school they will be attending? I've seen a few areas being mentioned over the last few weeks.

Tryles87- I had mine back in April for a different location and grade than the job I was successful for. Good luck

Just a quick one. On the map search, how long do you get to find all the items required and how many maps do you do?

I think it was 60 or 90 seconds and you WON'T get them all. I didn't and they offered me a job!
Just work swiftly in an orderly fashion and it will be fine. Half of me wonders whether that's just a warm up exercise anyway as its the thing they do first. There are better things to practice at home anyway, such as the maths for time and distance.

Wow they told you quickly. Were they as you imagined or did you think the lift test was faster than you thought? The next stage requires you to be in the top 5 for the position I think. Good luck

Evening mate

Yeah found out the afternoon after completing them, and I don't think anything can prepare you for the lift test - found it hard, but weirdly enough found the 2nd part of the test easier!

My status on the network rail site had changed to 'Under consideration for assessment 2' - but this has now changed to 'Invite for assessment 2 pending'. I saw this as a good sign and have already been out to visit the box in which I applied for, I won't name the person on here who helped but I am very thankful, and he was a really nice guy - who hopefully i'll be working with in the future!

Any other tips on the interviews would be greatly appreciated, already have the 8 non technical skills covered and know it's about the STAR format, was given some great info today about the box I've applied for - just hope I can do enough.

Cheers

They will ask you about situations in your previous life to judge the non-technical skills. Just make sure you take a moment to evaluate the question so that you actually answer it, rather than tell the something interesting!

NR core values, everyone home safe every day etc, growth of the use of the railway etc.

Sounds like you are prepared and that's what they like to see. I actually enjoyed my interview!

Will be sure to let you know how it goes - who knows, I could be on the January start for signaler school at this rate :) *wishful thinking*

Don't want to shatter your dreams but nothing is quick. After the interviews, which may not all be on the same day, they have to make a decision. Then they prepare a conditional offer, then you have to read and accept it. Then they have to they check references and do a medical...... Then they confirm the offer.... Feel free to PM me if you want any more detail.

Not really. They will always need signallers and just because someone may change who the manager is won't make much difference. What happens now - do NR suddenly stop migrating to ROCs? No they won't.

Where has this come from? The plan to devolve some of NR powers to companies is a plan, at the moment, and until contracts run out nothing will change for quite a while yet.

The problem is no one knows how far the plans go, will signalling be transferred out to tocs?

Will a recruitment freeze kick in etc?

I for one do not want to work for a TOC again.

It's a first political shot from a bloke who has no clue about the industry. No one will be making investment decisions today, or tomorrow based on that. I cant see that splitting out the signalling function to TOCs makes any sense anyway. NR's recruitment is hardly fast for a whole host of reasons. By the time you are employed as a signaller they will be desperate for you anyway.

You're not wrong there! I had my interview mid September and I'm only starting 15th January!

It's OK, not expecting a quick turn around! I'm currently in work at the moment so not in a bad situation. At the moment just taking things one step at a time and preparing for interview. How long does it roughly take for a date to come through for interview? My status changed to 'Invite to assessment 2 pending' on Friday!

All depends on the availability of the LOM and whoever else they have persuaded to sit with them. Mine was about 3 weeks after I had done the assessment centre. At least from the status you know now that you are going to get an interview. Congratulations!

Quick update - My interview is Monday :)

Good luck mate. I'm in week 4 of signalling school in Basingstoke. Have a look at the 8 non technical skills and think how you have used them in the past, at work or in our personal life. Obviously the more experienced you are the easier it is to draw on, but don't be afraid to make something up as long as it is believable.

Think about how you would answer some questions, such as "Tell me a time you have had to do a boring, repetitive task for a long period of time" they ask open ended questions like this, based around the NTS's.

Also leave any knowledge of signalling at home. Dont mention T3 possessions, track circuits or line blockages. They prefer a clean slate that doesn't have any preconceptions about the job an will go into the signalling training with an open mind.

No fear of that, I really am on a clean slate - visited the place of work once and thats my signalling experience! Feel I am prepared for interview, going to do a few practice interviews (girlfriend is a team leader at a company who use STAR) - had some great help so far.....going to need to buy a lot of people a lot of drinks! With regards to questions at the end of the interview, I was considering asking for their veiws with what is going on, with the anouncement of selling NR off in the future - would this be a wise? This is not my only question I have but thought maybe an open ended question would build a rapport with both interviewers???

Be careful on that - good to ask what effect that announcement said - but be careful of the sources and the slant they have. The unions have said that all to do with the hope to sell off NR - Chris Grayling explicitly said that NR will remain a public body.....

I wouldn't. Ask things about shift patterns, ask about the signalling training, especially as it it changing soon to include personal track safety things like that. Ask about the long term viability of your box (unless you've applied for a ROC) etc.
