I got told in my interview that no matter how close you are to the training centre you are expected to stay at the hotel to bond with your classmates and to work on problems outside of the classroom.
That is not correct, there is no way I’m stopping in a hotel away from my kids if I’m in a reasonable distance from home, and doesn’t impact my learning.

I reckon as long as you stay late and arrive early enough to get the hotel breakfast, you can enjoy both worlds?

Just browsing the My Benefits portal, does anyone know if signallers qualify for private medical insurance etc?

It has said about Executives + bands 1/2 qualify for family cover and bands 3/4 and controller grade 1 qualify for employee cover?

No, signallers aren't covered. Controllers are a separate grade structure.

This is correct, we have someone 10 minutes away from IST, they still have a hotel room booked for exactly the reasons stated
Whether you use it or not is a personal decision but they will book you one anyhow

Just like they’ll book train tickets whether you use them or not is up to you.

Precisely, my LOM hasn't booked me train tickets because I've specifically told them to save the money as I'll be driving due to travelling home some nights to see the kiddies
The hotel however they will do regardless, honestly some days it's needed, when getting deeper into the course you will need to revise late into the evening

It's great fun!

You can’t claim back the mileage if they book your train tickets though so make sure you do whichever works out best for you!

Some managers won't let you claim that anyway, mine likely would but I haven't bothered it's a negligible amount ~80 miles a week I could claim, which would actually be around 40 when removing my standard commute distance from that
Not to mention I'm actually saving fuel money at the moment!

Remember, return trips home during the week arent covered by the company either train or mileage

Stop spreading false info. Just because someone lives 10mins away doesn’t mean it’s mandatory.

I’m about half way through IST. The hotel was optional whether you live 10 minutes away or 1hr away. It’s your choice. People might have to go back home to look after pets, kids etc.

I choose to commute every day. They ask you before you start your course and book the hotels accordingly.

I stayed at home for the first three weeks of IST because I had to help with a young baby mainly but also a puppy… ( puppy not my idea ) I felt myself falling behind so I stayed every night from week 4 onwards if you live close and can lock yourself in a room for 1/3 hours a night sometimes more in the latter weeks I think it’s 100% doable however if you have distractions at home you can quite easily fall behind

Although it was about twenty years ago, I too chose to travel from.home each day. The school was about 45 miles away.

In some respects it was a good choice as it meant I missed all the furore in the hotel, caused by one of the other trainees. An indiscretion with a member of hotel staff saw the individual sacked from the course. That, and he was useless at signalling trains.

So a word of caution to all trainees. Enjoy the course, study hard, but don't get involved in any harassment of either hotel staff or colleagues.

I never said it's mandatory did I? I literally said, it's up to you if you use it.
Different LOMs, different scenarios...I simply stated what was happening here, if yours is different then so be it, but it's not false info at all.
Hope you're enjoying IST, Im currently enjoying it greatly, let's see if that continues haha!

Whether the LOM wants yo to stay or not, once you finish for the day that’s that, the company has no say on what you do outside paid hours. Just be aware you’ll not get mileage other than the agree days at the beginning and end of end week or train tickets home.

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has done their medical in Peterborough?
The post code they give is PE3 6AB but it comes up as a Quakers meeting hall or solicitors on google maps, there is a NR site the other side of the road but under a different post code?
If someone could literally point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance

It is indeed over the road on the Network Rail site. I think I've seen on here some people have had some issues getting in, but I simply buzzed the gate around 30 minutes before my appointment and was allowed on site. You're looking for a small mobile unit about halfway down the length of the platforms.

6 and 7 are at the ROC with East Sussex Link and Stretham Link. Grade 9 is at TBASC or at the ROC. I think if its at the ROC it'll be for the London Core Pod.

Shift times are at the ROC are all 12 hrs.
Different links start at different times. My ESWS is 6-6. The vic pod is 7-7 (I think) some are 6:30-6:30. TBASC I dont have a clue and would defer to @Sunset route

Hi all, have really enjoyed reading through these posts to try and understand what's ahead of me. I have been offered one of the roles that were advertised in spring this year (the larger the org the slower the recruitment...) for the Willesden area. No start date yet or IST as I'm yet to do my medical and I'm on a 3 month notice period and was told not to resign until the medical results were back.
I have gleamed from this forum that these Willesden area boxes are on 12 hour shifts but does anyone know the start times i.e. 6am-6pm, 6pm-6am? And also whether there is a "hand over" at the start and end of each shift which I need to factor into when I arrive. I have been looking at transport to get to and from work and it seems my local lines won't get me to work on time if it's at 6am. I am going to cycle commute full time but when the weather is dangerous out I'd like to know if I can get the tube or whether it would be a night bus.
Cheers in advance!

Evening guys! I don’t suppose there are any Grade 2 signallers on here who work around “York Outstations”? If so, would you be kind enough drop me a private message please?

Evening all!

Just got an unsuccessful email after interviewing last week. Really gutted but it was my first application and I've apparently been put on a reserve list. Just wondering if multiple people are put on a reserve list for a single post? Also, on the job portal the status says "Unsuccessful", is this still the case even if you're on the reserve list?

This forum has been a goldmine and all the information has been very much appreciated. As far as my own application the 2 interviewers were very friendly and I didn't feel like they were trying to trick me. Ive requested feedback so hopefully I might be able to put it to use in the future. All the best to everyone applying and well done to those successful.

What area was your interview for?
