Hello All,

I thought it would be beneficial to guys on here that are in holding in the talent pool and are waiting to begin their training at the Hornsey Depot School. I'll update weekly in blog style but this first bit will cover the first 5 weeks. 1 bit of advice, get into the mindframe of school learning, sat in a classroom and being talked at, this will be your life for the nect 5 weeks minimum.

Week 1 - Was sent to Kentish Town for two days, major boring ****, but pay attention to the brief introduction to the pension scheme and BRASS, this will be your retirement fund and your lump sum when you decide to pack in working.
Last day of the week, headed to the training school and meet your instructors, if you've got Mark count yourself lucky, if he doesn't know it then its not worth knowing. Issued uniforms (it wont fit you so only open one of each item and then arrange to exchange it). Issued with various bits of literature like Sectional Appendix, Rule Book etc. End of week one.
Week 2 - PTS or Personal Track Safety. Safety rules and regs to keep you safe trackside and deal with emergencies in service. Classroom Monday - Thursday. Written and practical assessment Friday (this is a safety critical test, you only get 2 attempts at it. Fail twice and your gone). Its 90% common sense, 10% railway knowledge.
Week 3 - Mix of railway infrastructure, use of the sectional appendix, and an introduction to traction. Written assessment on Friday. We also got out for a front end drive on the Wednesday and did a simulator run on the Monday.
Week 4 - Shunting, Signalling, AWS and TPWS. Most important knowledge base for a driver. Methods of signalling and types of signal. Shunting moves and handsignals. AWS and TPWS safety systems. Friday written assessment.

That's where Im at, heading into Hornsey to do my week 4 assessment, so wish me luck. Week 5 is rules for a few days and then the first big assessment paper on everything covered so far. This is a safety critical exam too, so only two attempts.

I'll keep updating this thread as I progress.....hopefully.

Good luck mate. It's a really cool job, the benefits and prospects are second to none. Nearly everyone is more than happy to help and love their job, there are a few moaners but then you ask how long they've been on the railway and they say '30 years', thats always made me laugh. Work hard, including in your free time at home, as there's a huge volume of information to take in. Again, good luck.

The DMI is 1 on 1 with one of the leads of the recruitment team. The questions are based on the short questionnaire you filled in after doing your computer based test. You will given a chance to look over your answers and even change them if you wish. Its more a test of your ability to adapt to situations and verbally communicate. Good luck, this is the final hurdle.

Shame you started after me. Would have been nice to know what's coming up by reading this thread.

The Mark 1 Paper Literature are ok.

Full of grammar errors and awfully worded sentences. As well as a few tiny non-railway technical errors. eg. GRP TPWS Loops aren't made from 'General' reinforced plastic - There's no such thing. It should be Glass Reinforced Plastic (https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/unit...ction-warning-system-tpws-products-equipmen-8) . (I doubt they'd justify the cost of using Graphite Reinforced Plastic.)

Always use the rulebook as your backup to the notes.

From OP.
Week 5 assessment done. Couple of minor reviews but cleared up verbally immediately after sitting the paper. Weeks 6, 7 and 8 are spent 'Front Ending'. This means following a driver through their shift pattern for 3 weeks. You sit in the driving cab and simply observe, and try to absorb as much as you can. Some say it's a bit tedious, but I find it really interesting. Having seen real driving I'm pretty convinced I could give it a go lol, but still a fair old way to go before that happens. FYI for a couple guys on here heading to TL, your training course is in the new DLP format and is totally different in structure to what Im doing with GN, so unfortunately this wont be of much help to you. Good luck to everyone starting a course.

Mirrored sentiments to what ND2017 is saying cos I'm on the same course as him. What I'll say to anyone joining GTR on the TL / GN side is that put the work in the trainers will be happy with you, just don't annoy them. It will become brain overload at some point but then when you are front ending, it all comes together.

I really need to change my name as 332s are junk after traversing them for over 9 years lol

Good to see your still going well. Just a quickie, what's the DLP format ?

How are you finding the classroom vs real world situations ?

I am currently studying the new driver learning program dlp for Ashford depot, its very much about you learning it yourself rather than being told something in a classroom. Still very new to it, passed pts this week and went out in a class 700 today for the first time, fyi we are only being taught class 700 for Ashford depot.

Considering its my first time ever at the front of a train it was really good, nice central driving position, very good cameras for the doors making sure everyone was clear. definitely got up to speed quickly but cannot compare to anything else and the brakes were very good, it runs apparently 5 different systems for the brakes so my instructor told me.

Interesting info NewDriver2017. I will be following this. I am waiting for a date to do the medical and was verbally informed that Hornsey will probably be my depot starting November or January. Was so happy to receive that call.
So how many people in your intake out of interest? Is it Monday to Friday? Hours per week? Holiday time?
Thanks and good luck.

Well I can answer these:

8 people per group
9 - 4, Monday to Friday
No holiday until end of week 14 which we will have a week off before traction
Pay 26,493 p/a with 4 weekly pay
Assessments every week (decided to throw that in there)

With our group, we're not sure where we are gonna be based when the depot shuffling takes place so as it stands, we're KX based. Things have changed as Finsbury Park depot got canned.

Good question as we don't know! Although our contract states Kings Cross, they could move us to Hornsey or WGC which are the new depots opening up. Estimated pass out, you mean length of time, then its 14 months but thats subject to DI availability.

Hi all. Sorry it's been long since my last update. To catch up, weeks 6 7 and 8 were spent 'Front Ending' with an experienced driver. Basically window licking and getting a feel for how it feels up the front of the cab.
Weeks 9 - 14, back in the classroom learning more rules. Then end of week 14, a written test of approx 120 questions followed by a review session the day after 1 on 1 with one of the senior instructors. This interview last 2 and a half hours! My luck I got the head of the training school and we went over everything from start to finish, even the stuff i got spot on in the written exam.
Week 15, week off. I got drunk for the first time in 4 months, it didn't take long and it hurt the day after.
Week 16 - 20 is traction training on the 313 class. Assessments every Friday as usual. I've just passed week 2. Back in on Monday for week 3.
Wait, out.

Good to see your getting through.

How are you finding the training overall ?

How are you finding the speed of the course, too fast or paced about right ?

Has anyone failed or dropped out yet ?

Pop quiz.. Single line working and working of a single line.... j/k

How you finding railway culture and the railway environment ?

Assessment, assessment, assessment, how many you got left ?

Have you driven a train yet ?

MRPCC, MRIC, MRG, AHB, LOL and WTF. How you finding the acronyms of hell ?

Hi.
Training is very heavy. Lots to cover and attempt to recall at a moment's notice, but thats to be expected. It's all interesting and it's well presented by some great instructors.
As for pace, it's slow. However there are many things that just cannot be rushed.
We started with 8 lads on the course, and now there are 7. That's all I'll say on that as politics are ongoing.
Pop quiz? Piss off you cheeky *******.
Ive genuinely yet to meet anyone in the railway family I don't like, it's a family type community. People can't do enough to help you if you're big enough to ask.
The assessments are relentless and tough, but for a 60k pay packet at the end its really nothing to moan about.
I have indeed driven a train, just in the sidings so far and some coupling moves and approaches to buffer stops. Two more weeks of traction and we move on to ECS moves on the main line which I'm looking forward to.
The acronyms are ok to me being from a military background but more cocks on a 313 than a gay wedding at the Pink Flamingo.
