I cannot confirm this, but looking at Twitter it does seem that some people did indeed buy new tickets as instructed. One in particular then tried to claim the refund and was then told they could only claim the amount minus the price of the original ticket. They also claim that tweets promising a full refund have now been deleted.

If true that’s absolutely shocking.

As in that they wouldn't get a totally free journey? I can't see a massive issue with that, though it is a bit bizarre that it's being done that way rather than them simply refunding the additional ticket in full in return for submission of the GC ticket so that can't be refunded.

I'm not entirely sure. I'm wondering whether these now deleted tweets promised a complete refund of both tickets and that is where their issue lies.

If it is the case that passengers affected by the GC cancellations are being expected to remain out of pocket for the cost of their LNER tickets or part thereof, that is unacceptable. Refunding the price difference between the LNER ticket bought and the GC ticket held, so that the passenger pays what they would have paid had they bought a walk-up ticket on LNER originally, is entirely unreasonable, and in all the circumstances I expect a county court claim against GC for the balance would succeed easily.

Passengers do not have a right to a refund of both tickets however, assuming they were conveyed to their destinations – though DelayRepay may apply depending on the circumstances.
