I am uploading this Video To see If anybody Can Advise What to hell has happened to my PC for about 2-3 Weeks Now it has been Running Mega Slow & I mean slow It sometime distorts sound etc etc & it can take up-to ten seconds to preform tasks that it would have done instantly such as opening an IE window or running Outlook express .

I have not installed any new programmes prior to this starting to happen & To be honest I am totally bewildered , I have sweep-ed the system for Spy-ware & Trojans un-authorised scripts & ran a full Deep Scan Virus Check twice Since this has happened It found one virus Listing it as a medium threat & destroyed it But it was not on My C Drive But on another internal drive I have fitted

It is so Bad that I can not Run Microsoft Train Simulator & FRAPS together & that was never a problem As I have 29 Train Sim Videos up here that I made on the Same PC using the two previously mention programmes.

I would be grateful for all advice & opinions as to possible cause & cure
Just to re cap
I have not installed anything prior to this problem arising
I have had Clean results from all recent Virus & spy-ware checks
& I have deleted all unnecessary files using C Cleaner & Easy Clean
The System has a Firewall which is run in Stealth mode
I update my virus definitions daily
So with taking all theses precautions Why I am at my Wits end as to why this Problem has arose:???::???::???::???:.

Start the computer from the mains , ( ie not reset it) , then without starting any application, including internet, click CTRL-ALT-DEL once, to bring up task manager. Write down the process's that are running ( don't use Notepad or Word or something else YET)
Close the process manager window, then go online and let us have a copy to see where the problem is...

1. There could be a problem with a recent anti-virus update. You might consider reverting back to the PC's state before you had problems.
2. There is a horrible problem with Outlook Express which can be affected by, I found, Windows updates, i.e. the auto updates that the PC downloads. Sometimes those updates can hang around trying to be installed but cannot, and that can slow a machine down. Also, OE may be trying to compress. I have a huge database and I have to make sure that I cancel compression otherwise it can lock up the performance.
3. Send that screenshot of the Task Manager, as that may show what is occupying the CPU/CPUs.
4. Just a thought...is your fan working ok, and the temp not too high?

I do Not Use OUTLOOK Express ( I have a full version of Incredimail) & I have fallen Foul of Auto Updates before so I disable them now & just source them manually but none has occurred around the period in question & yes Both Case fans have been checked .

Thanks for your suggestions They are greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I thought you mentioned:

such as opening an IE window or running Outlook express

Query then if, and this has happened so I know, any Windows updates were made around the 22/7 then without you knowing? You can check update history online. Others will know millions more times than I do but I would be tempted to go back to the previous back-up point before the 22nd July and revert back to that state thus negating in theory any software updates that have gone wrong. I used to turn-off Windows Updates and was then warned every time by that little icon that I had done so. My daughter unwittingly clicked on the thing unbeknown to me and then it auto-updated.

I've checked all the process's that are running that I didn't recognise, and they all check out. The allocation of CPU cycles seems correct, but that doesn't check that everything is installed correctly or that there are hidden virus problems ( some viruses do manage to fool the task manager).

Try this :-
Reset the computer from the mains, that way no virus is carried forward etc.
Logon to internet and go to http://www.processlibrary.com/directory?files=wmiprvse
There is nothing suspicious about that file, but it has the link I wanted on it,
scroll down and look for :-
Scan Your PC including wmiprvse.exe to Detect any Security Threat

Follow the onscreen instructions for a full check to see if there's any hidden spyware, virus problems, or registry errors etc..

Works for me when I've had these sort of problems, and its usually a virus which intercepts a valid file's operation. A lot of Virus can change the antivirus installed so as not to show!!

Post us the results if there is still a problem.

ps it does take time, go and watch TV for half an hour..

Yes , cut the mains supply.. its important when doing these diagnoses that you start from a 'fixed' position, because once you have started the computer , and then perhaps used a proggy, all sorts of 'extra' problems may appear because of the initial problem. You will be chasing red herrings and get nowhere if you don't reset to zero every time.

Mojo, Adaware SE Personal is the old version. The latest is Adaware 2007

I know this is not of much use, but a similar thing happened to my PC and the only fix was an operating system reinstall

Out of interest, which antivirus/firewall do you use? Some times a new installation of the antivirus can help,

fought this problem for several months and tried everything I could think of. I knew there was something "taking" over my computer because it would take at least 30-60 minutes to boot up from a cold start. I tried to get into Task Manager and close programs one at a time, but nothing seemed to make a difference. I finally was having, what seemed like, a problem with Norton AV Systemworks 2002. I noticed e-mail being sent, would hang up when the AV was checking it outgoing. MY SOLUTION: Uninstalled Norton's AV and then reinstalled. My computer flies now like new. Such a simple solution, but I just overlooked a complete program uninstall (could have been any program I was running I suppose), and reinstall. MY CPU was maxing out at 100% before. Now it's normal at around 4-6% with lots of stuff running in the background. BTW, I installed Spybot and Adaware early on thinking I had spyware problems. They do seem to help.

I have had my computer number one for at least five years and have come up against this problem occasionally.Sometimes I have reloaded windows.

As a last resort I have done this.It can be difficult as you have to get all the drivers. All my computers work fine. How many hard drives do you have fitted?

My computer number 3 the hard drive stopped working so I had to remove the drive and put a spare in and reload Windows and now it works fine.
