As I'm going to be doing some cross-pennine line bashing in a few weeks I was wondering if there are still any loco-hauled or HST paths from the NW ( Liverpool, Preston, Manchester ) across Yorkshire and onwards to York / Newcastle. Are they all Northern / TPE DMUs ?

As above, there are not even HSTs to the west of Leeds
The way I got round this was travel by HST to the north of York to Newcastle, where you have a choice of either Cross Country or NXEC

As already stated, there are nothing other than DMU services from either side of the Pennines to the other. :(
