Avanti - Trainee Train Drivers - Multiple Locations (28/02/23)

Having been in the talent pool for practically 2 years now, I've seen a few rotations. The usual procedure is that we're informed of upcoming courses and then those who are selected are formally invited. Once all positions have been fulfilled, those of us who are still in the talent pool, usually receive an email advising of such and when to expect the next update.

The most recent rotation, starting with the email that we received in October informed us of the upcoming courses. However, this is where it departed with the usual procedure.

Some people were invited to courses that weren't initially advised to exist, such as the May course.
We haven't been advised that the January and March courses are now filled.
Furthermore and wih a greater degree of disappointment, we haven't received advice of when to expect the next update.

I'm not one to mither as I know these things take time, but just thought I'd reach out to see if anybody else has made any enquiries or received an email advising when the talent acquisition team intend to provide the next update.

I've noticed that too.

I don't have any extra info to add, but something does seem a bit 'off' at the moment.

Apologies to all. Had to take some deep breaths! It's just frustrating that no-one is kept in a proper loop. I'm not going to let it live rent free in my head anymore! If they call or email so be it! Merry Christmas all!

Sent my application for the ‘Qualified Driver’ talent pool at Polmadie Depot on 3rd December. Not had any response or even acknowledgement of application thought it was strange not even to receive an automated response.

I notice the positions aren’t being advertised online now so I’m not sure if that means I won’t hear back or if it’s just a case of wait and see. My application on the website is still showing as successfully submitted so fingers crossed it’s still to be processed.

I’d imagine it’s the same as everyone else just called up when they need you . You would think they were desperate tho going by the amount of services getting cancelled . I wish you every success in your application

Yeah that’s fair enough I’m not in a rush I just wondered if that was normal to not have heard anything after sending the initial application.

Wonder how they work it out must be depot needs first before opc results/validity . Some guy I know got a course a couple of weeks after his DMI . Best of luck in the future guys and gals

Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s depot dependant as I’ve been in the talent pool since Feb 2023 and I’ve applied for Manchester but not heard of anyone been offered a place at Manchester depot yet (granted there’s plenty of people not in this group)

Bit frustrating really as i sat in the talent pool when it was Virgin Trains and then they lost the contract and I re-applied with only 6 months remaining on my OPC results in which I had to do them all again (successfully) but now I’m worried that an offer may not come and I’ve been sat on this for best part of 7-8 years by the time the next update will come

Ano Ano I hear ya it’s disappointing but like anything happens for a reason maybe it’s just not for ya . Back to the drawing board I think it’s like a draw in a cup tie or a lucky bag . Best of luck in your future endeavours

That's really unlucky timing. Manchester seem to have been bottom of the pile for recruitment. Do you specifically want to work for AWC or could you apply for another TOC?

I wouldn’t say it’s no for me as it’s always been my dream job, with both my parents having worked for virgin/avanti for over 20 years and an uncle who was a train manager and successfully got on the trainee driver scheme and has recently passed out and another uncle and auntie who both work on board for avanti and have done since it was virgin it’s always been my dream but I guess like you say it’s just a luck of the draw

Yeah it seems so! I am to believe that they have had quite a few transfer offers put in to be re-located to Crewe which I thought may work in favour for us Manchester lot in the talent pool.

My parents both work on Avanti currently so I’d really like to be able to work alongside them but luckily I’m still a few years under 30 so I’ve got plenty of time but after 7 years when I first applied for Virgin back in early 2018 it’s just the constant checking emails every 10 minutes or every time the phone rings just hoping it’s “The Call”

Hi mate, I've been in the talent pool myself since Feb 2023 for Manchester. A friend of mine at the same stage as us for Manchester has just started on the January course but he is the only one I've heard of for Manchester getting a course.

I applied for Polmadie on December 3rd & I’m a qualified driver.

However I haven’t had any response at all not even an automated confirmation of my application.

My application is still showing as “successfully submitted” on my Avanti account on the website so I’ll just wait and see if anything comes of it.
