Lucky you! I never made it until 2015. (Although I have walked parts of the route South of Hawick). My first trip over the Waverley Route
My second trip - with an interesting diversion - will be documented in JanuaryLucky you! I never made it until 2015. (Although I have walked parts of the route South of Hawick).
A very good day out. You were lucky to get 60027, when 60052 was failed at Carlisle with a hot box. The A4 just happened to be at Kingmoor after working in from the north, and from photographs I have seen of the tour Merlin looked in rather grimy condition. In contrast the A3 was smartly turned out, even sporting a diagonal yellow band on its cab side, banning it south of Crewe on the WCML!!5th June 1965
Railtour
60052 Prince Palatine – Edinburgh Waverley to Carlisle via Newcastle. Loco failed at Carlisle
60027 Merlin – Carlisle to Edinburgh via Waverley Route.
I do recall the contrasting condition of the two locos and thinking how fortunate it was there happened to be an A4 on hand to work forward.A very good day out.
