BR ran some DMU specials from Darlington to Eastgate, on a couple of Saturdays during the month. The Bishop Auckland-Eastgate section serving the Eastgate cement works, had lost it’s passenger service 25 years earlier in June 1953. IIRC the specials ran to commemorate this?

A very good day out. You were lucky to get 60027, when 60052 was failed at Carlisle with a hot box. The A4 just happened to be at Kingmoor after working in from the north, and from photographs I have seen of the tour Merlin looked in rather grimy condition. In contrast the A3 was smartly turned out, even sporting a diagonal yellow band on its cab side, banning it south of Crewe on the WCML!!
