Whichever side of the "is 47901 a 47?" argument you stood on, I decided it was probably best to red pen it anyway, especially as I only needed 12 at the time. Also, I was a sucker for a bit of 56 noise.

1Z37 "The Meldon Quarryman"

56081 (TI) B'ham NS-Rugby-Bletchley-Oxford-Didcot avoider-Swindon-Melksham-Westbury
47901 (BR) Westbury-Yeovil PM-Yeovil Jc-Exeter
37698 (CF) Exeter SD-Meldon Quarry
08584 (LA) Shunt at Meldon
37698 (CF) Meldon Quarry-Exeter SD
47901 (BR) Exeter SD-Taunton-Castle Cary-Westbury
56081 (TI) Westbury-Bath-Dr Days-Cheltenham-Worcester-Camp Hill-B'ham NS

Probably OK to say this 36 years later, but the driver on 901 on the return really wanted to see how fast it would go. Some people claimed it nearly reached 100 but the quickest I clocked for a mile was 91. 901 was restricted to 75mph, I believe.

Apologies for the delayed posting:
Monday 07/06/04
87010 0833 Euston – Crewe
Another work trip. The journey home was quite eventful …
87004 1549 Crewe – Milton Keynes Central
This was the 1323 Holyhead – Euston. It started off 50’ late from Crewe due to some issues on the North Wales Coast. Further south the Slow Lines were closed for work to extend the platforms at Tring. Unfortunately a 390 then failed on the Up Fast at Cheddington, stopping the job. My train was terminated at Milton Keynes Central. Cheers then!
87006 1843 Milton Keynes Central – Euston
78’ late, and called additionally at Leighton Buzzard to pick up passengers off the failed 390. Arrived Euston 2056, which was 166’ late on the timings of the 1323 ex Holyhead on which I had started the journey.

Thursday 08/06/00
A work trip to Doncaster:
91025 0830 Kings Cross – Doncaster
After work, instead of heading home immediately, I was distracted by the prospect of having 90039 to Bradford Forster Square. I’d only had one run with that loco 10 years previously, so this was quite a bonus – and it was required class 90 track beyond Leeds for me too:
90039 1722 Doncaster – Bradford Forster Square
90039 1938 Bradford Forster Square – Kings Cross
This remains the only occasion I ever managed to have a class 90 to Bradford.
I’ve had 1 x class 89, 1 x class 90 and 1 x class 91 to Bradford. I don’t expect I’ll be able to expand the numerical sequence by getting an 88 or a 92 there, but you never know …

What's the Finnish translation of "Desperate Ned Leap"? ;)
Ha, ha! A necessary move to reach the town station from the ferry terminal. (The boat train was continuing to Helsinki....but I had a date in Turku that evening with a young Finnish lady whom I had met on Darlington station the previous autumn!)

Meanwhile:

@D6130 is not alone! In September 1985, with two friends, I toured Scandinavia, and on the 22nd we walked from Turku town to the Harbour ('Sataama' IIRC) and had 2759 and 2543 on the 2035 to Helsinki, just back to Turku Central station. Our next move, in the morning, was the ferry to Stockholm so as I have not been back to Finland since that was my last VR haulage.

The journey home was less interesting:

A Thames Branches Day Ranger was cheaper than an Off-Peak return to Henley, so I got to Paddington early and played IET bingo.

I’ve largely omitted my numerous Reading – Paddington HST commuting moves from this thread, as it would very quickly become overwhelmingly repetitive and boring. I make an exception here:
43009 + 43139 1822 Paddington – Reading
This was my first run with an MTU re-engined HST power car, 43009. It was so much quieter than the standard Paxmans that I was unsure at first that it was even running!

Awww, thanks for giving me an idea. I better take the granddaughter there. Suppose we can reach that on our old gits and whippersnappers oyster cards.

Oh yes, you can get there using your Oyster cards. Central line to Epping and then vintage buses to North Weald/Ongar which are included in the railway fares.
