Apologies for posting a few hours before 20th July, but I will be away and off line from early Thursday morning for nearly three weeks.
20th July 1986
Another of my epic European trips has emerged from my archives although sadly this time without any detail of the traction or type of trains used although predominantly loco hauled other than units in Netherlands and on Danish branches. The object of the 12 night trip was to travel over new routes in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark and to make my fourth visit across the Iron Curtain, having been issued with a Transit Visa for East Germany and Tourist Visas for Poland and Czechoslovakia.
Apologies in advance for the absence of accents etc. on numerous place names, and for any spelling errors.

10.12 Kobenhavn H to Berlin Ost – 3 coaches to Gedser where the single DSB coach was detached and just 2 x DR coaches joined the ferry, just me and two other passengers (an elderly couple) on the through portion to Berlin. On arrival at Warnemunde the DDR Border staff methodically worked through the two coaches all but dismantling each compartment in the two coaches presumably looking for contraband or even stowaways in the roof space (finding neither) although why anybody would want to be smuggled into the DDR remains a mystery.
Ticket wise I was travelling on FIP Coupons but the East German Railways were, I think, along with those of Russia and Albania, the only European Railways not then offering FIP coupons (or Priv Fares), or some other means of obtaining free staff travel. I was therefore in possession of a full price single ticket from Warnemunde Mitte See to Frankfurt Oder Grense as well as my Transit Visa for the DDR.
19.15 Berlin Ost to Frankfurt Oder (overnight in pre booked hotel).

09.30 Frankfurt Oder to Warszawa Cen (hotel overnight)
26 July 1986
Whilst in Warsaw I visited the Railway Museum and after a while, in true Iron Curtain style, I was approached by an official who indicated I should not be taking photos of the exhibits! By then I had captured quite a few and later also managed to surreptitiously take a photo from the street of a train on an embankment above.
Local Train Warszawa Powisli to W Wschodnia
18.35 W Wschodnia to Praha Hlavni (via Wroclow & Lichkov) – I had a sleeper booked on this train - or thought I had. The standard blue card sleeper reservation (and appropriate price in pounds) but the coach number matched not the sleeping car but the seated coach and it was clear I would not gain entry to the sleeper – on my return I was able to have the sleeper fee refunded.

Why have I come back to Kobenhavn? Well, seeking to travel light for my travels in ‘The East’ I had left a bag in the Left Luggage there, plus the 'all you can eat' buffet in the station restaurant was always worth revisiting, and excellent value for money.
