That may well have been 40199 on 1S51 Scatborough - Queen Street.
I did have 40199 at some point around that time (it is underlined for haulage in my 1981 Platform 5 book) so you may well be correct. When I dig my spotting books out I can confirm it.

Another Summer Saturday on the Chesterfield, Sheffield and Rotherham axis. Today I found myself heading out to Barnsley with 37226 together with a large contingent of fellow bashers. At Barnsley most of us disembarked but rather than wait for the next train to Sheffield we instead caught an express bus service. I don’t think the driver knew what was going on when his usual cargo, a few Saturday Shoppers had now doubled in size with his bus now full and standing! I can only think that the bus was taken in order to get back to Sheffield so as not to miss out on any “Big” engines. I was able to reach Chesterfield to pick up 37160 on the Harwich Boat Train.

Barnsley off of the Blackpool was a fun move. On a different date, a group of us grabbed a taxi to get to Doncaster for the 37 on the Newcastle - Yarmouth.

The first thing our cabbie did was drive home to switch to another unplated car. But not before a huge kerbside bust up with his missus!

At Doncaster our 37 arrived with firebells ringing and a man in marigolds waiting. Luckily, Doncaster kicked out another big ‘un. Shame my records are all gone.

Back in 78 if the loco had wheels I probably required it! Half the day red-penning 45/1s before things started to improve in the afternoon with three required Class 40s.

An unexpected triple header with all locos taking power. I’m not sure where the 25s worked from, presumably Newcastle.

A spotting trip covering the delights of Bescot, Shirebrook and Barrow Hill. On my way home I picked up my 14th Deltic for haulage. It was at this point that I first thought about trying to get all 22 for haulage. I failed in this challenge, with St Paddy entering Doncaster Works in November 77, emerging very briefly in March 78. I also missed out with Nimbus which also entered Doncaster Works in March 78, neither of them returning to traffic.

After a number of trips on this diagram during the summer with 47373 and her Immingham friends (as well as quite a few random other no-heat 47s) the thought of another entire day in Skegvegas didn't appeal, so by September we were taking a dmu to Boston for its far better ambience (and pubs - there was one that did excellent food as well!).

A day trip to Swindon Works Open Day, where there were many withdrawn Westerns on display. As I entered the works I was surprised to see people leaving with memorabilia collected from the locomotives. This included someone with a cab window and another lad struggling with a cab door!

I had a Class 40 headcode disc (quite heavy, that) and still have a brass horn cover which may possibly have been liberated from a Doncaster Works open day in 1984 (ex-40093 and 40096, if I remember correctly).

Today there is a relief to the Yarmouth-Newcastle and although the scheduled service is boilered 37084 the relief is a required 40196. The day goes slowly down hill from here especially towards the end when 47420 is turned out on the 2039 Hull-Leeds!

The move with 40049 from York to Stockport was notable in that the line from Stalybridge to Guide Bridge had only just been made available for loco hauled trains, as previously there was a weight restriction over a dodgy bridge. Previously the train ran via OA&GB Junction and avoided Guide Bridge.

As for Skegness, I never did manage to get a Deltic there. I also never had 55001 and 55020.

The first time that I did the Shrewsbury Mails was on a spotting trip to Crewe in 1977. I was expecting to see a few Class 76s at Guide Bridge but was puzzled on how I had missed the stabling point. It was only later that I found out that the train was routed via OA &GB.

and off to Scotland for a Freedom. The next 4,564 miles would be uninterrupted 47s. Apologies in advance.

Nothing to apologise for. Not your fault if some people on here have less discerning taste in traction.

After arriving into Edinburgh with Deltic 15 my hunch was that it would work an ECS to Dundee prior to working the 0910 to Kings Cross. I would follow it there, however I would have to travel via Glasgow. Disappointingly the 0435 to Glasgow was a Duff but a good thrash was had to Dundee with 37114. My hunch worked out and on my arrival Deltic 15 was busying itself shunting its train into the platform. I travelled as far as York before returning back to Edinburgh with Deltic 17. All seemed to be going well when Deltic 2 was attached to the 2045 Kings Cross service. I settled into a compartment and after the train’s departure I laid out and fell asleep. The next thing I was aware of was being awoken by large banging noises, then I realised that my feet were rising above my head. I sat up as the carriage began to tilt to one side. Fearing the coach would crash onto its side I put my feet towards the window. Fortunately the train came to a halt with the coach leaning at a 45 degree angle. Apparently a set of points had split under the carriage I was travelling in, derailing it, with everything else on the train staying on the track. I along with other passengers from the derailed carriage made our way, with a little difficulty, through the gangway into the next carriage where we waited for instructions from the train crew. After a short period of time we walked to the back of the train where we were able to get onto the platform at Manors. It was now pouring with rain so everyone waited undercover on the redundant platform until taxis could be ordered to take us to Central station. I don’t believe there were any injuries to passengers.
