I spent much of summer 1979 working for Travellers Fare in Manchester Victoria station. My favourite job was working in The Coastal Buffet and Bar which was the one located on platform 11/12, so I could see all the trains coming and going (and make careful note of which locos were on which diagrams for later use). Whilst they have managed a good job of incorporating the tram station and preserving some of the older parts of the station buildings, the utterly drab modern station that now exists is just miserable. I'm sure building the MEN Arena overhead seemed like a good idea at the time.
My wages for working there in the summer were little better than being on the dole, this being long before the "Minimum Wage" concept arrived. However I truly enjoyed it, and it proved to be an excellent base for cranking operations.

The tiled walls and the wooden booking office windows are all cool and, of course, the large map. And the frontage. But, crikey, the platform side is awful.

Oh yes memory jogged. Guide Bridge - I remember standing on the ground between two 40s. It was almost frightening - the noise. I also remember leaving the station to get a bus - I think it was a Sunday as that was the only day I could get to Manchester. It might have been a bus towards Reddish though. But as I walked away yet another freight would come scuttling through and I would rush back to id the loco. I had to tear myself away in the end. Every time I went to Manchester I seemed to have to go via the freight only line beyond Walsall to Rugely. Usually a duff and an excruciatingly slow route !. That bit into my available time further away from Birmingham.

I bet I got a lot more EMUs than you !. Any loco for me was an excitement - a lean diet of 33s, 71s and 73s. Best place for me was Hoo Junction yard. That has changed very little except that it is now fenced and gated - progress !.

The 185s are probably the second type of unit, after 158s, since the 40s held sway on Trans Pennine ?.

Being based in Warrington was a greatt place for spotting in the late 1970s. Warrington BQ being on the WCML meant you could clear the electric locos pretty quickly. The amount of freight on the WCML, in Warrington Yard and Arpley, plus all the stuff to Fidlers Ferry gave you a lot of diesel locos too, although they were 24/25/40/47 then. 56s came next but 20s, 31s, 37s were rare until the 1980s. I've got some spotting books, so I'll give you a flavour later but not every day!

You didn't need to go far to change the scenery and still get lots of traffic - Crewe, of course, Manchester and all its depots - Longsight, Reddish, Guide Bridge, Newton Heath, then Wigan Springs Branch.

Then a bit further afield to Yorkshire and the Midlands - Leeds/Sheffield/Derby/Nottingham with depots at Holbeck, Knottingley, Healey Mills, Tinsley, Shirebrook, Barrow Hill, Toton
Birmingham with Bescot, Saltley, Tyseley and New St, of course.

All good memories.

Southern EMUs were (and still are) a mystery to me. I did a few spotting trips to London - Victoria, Waterloo, Clapham Junction and the Southern depots - Hither Green, Stewarts Lane, Slade Green. So many trains though!

My memory of Warrington Bank Quay is of the abiding smell of soap powder.
One of my missing bits of track is the low level line underneath Bank Quay and on towards Altrincham. The Manchester to Brighton overnight got diverted that way with a class 40 at least once.

The soap factory has closed recently.

The low level line (which I've never done) is still there towards Fiddlers Ferry, but the power station has now closed. The line eastwards only goes a little way past Arpley now, having been lifted beyond that for a long time now. It used to go past my school.

The one saving grace of the new Victoria is that the low ceiling from the Arena amplifies the sound of TPE 68s departing the station.

A Class 40 would give a good account of itself departing Vic these days - would be like my memories from Sunderland.

Well, almost on this day in history...

Spotting in Warrington

I just happen to have an after school evening spotting at Warrington from Monday 19th June 1978. I was there for about an hour from 7 to 8.

Stabled on Arpley Yard - 25102, 25253, 25323, 40128, 40129, 40143, 40195, 47349.
40087 passed on an Eastbound freight.

Warrington Bank Quay

25282 (low level)
40014, 40020 (passenger working) , 40087 (low level light engine)
47322, 47349, 47455 (low level), 47353 (low level), 47027 (Laira Duff, so quite rare).

Good for you Peter. It's heartening to know that someone is actually reading this stuff.
I can’t help coming back here to have a lament…

I don’t have all of my bashing records unfortunately. I kind of packed in around 1978/9.

I’d go out of my way for a convoluted journey when I could (working at BREL Litchurch Lane Works helped enormously with the free passes but that’s whole topic on its own ) eg if I was heading to London I’d often travel up to Doncaster to score a Deltic to Kings Cross.

Keep the thread going please

Yeah, I'm missing a couple of books.

I also didn't record anything from 1993 to mid 2018. During that time I did a lot of travel to London, mainly from 2006 onwards so lots of Pendos. I also travelled to Leeds a fair bit so would have had far more units than my current records show. Plus my two years commuting on Merseyrail.

Some nice moves by @NorthWestRover there. Sundays in the North West were often entertaining, with the OLE switched off, and engineering diversions in place, giving the possibility of class 40s over track you'd never get them on during the week.
Here's my contribution for today:

Thursday 19/06/80
Word had reached me of a potential unusual class 40 working in Wales the following day, so I set off overnight to get into position for it:
85028 2050 Euston – Rugby
81002 2208 Rugby – Crewe
With required Roarers on both the 2050 Inverness and 2055 Stranraer departures from Euston, I couldn’t go wrong.

Saturday 19/06/82
Straight off late shift at Euston, heading north to cover whatever 40 action I could find …
86007 2215 Euston – Stafford

Tuesday 19/06/84
After a day at work, a move becomes apparent:
43071 + 43114 1940 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
37148 2013 Wakefield Westgate – York via Leeds
This was the 1413 ex Portsmouth Harbour, and a required 37.

Wednesday 19/06/85
87016 1505 Glasgow Central – Euston
EMUs 1540 + 1613 2153 Victoria – Dover Priory
The beginning of a short trip to France with my wife.

Friday 19/06/87
37426 1719 Crewe – Abergavenny
An after-work trip to visit relatives.

Friday 19/06/92
43005 + 43174 0859 Reading – Cardiff
After a work meeting in Cardiff, there are alternative routes home that include a train that is hauled up the Marches on Fridays Only:
31432 + 31411 1715 Cardiff Central – Shrewsbury
158 789 Shrewsbury – Wolverhampton
86247 2033 Wolverhampton – Birmingham New Street
47831 2106 Birmingham New Street – Reading

On our Swiss trip we also travelled from Interlaken to Zermatt. We did a mountain railway when we were there, with views over a glacier from the top. Plus we got the tourist photo with a St Bernard and the Matterhorn in the background. After that, it was the Glacier Express to Davos.

So back to this date in history...

19th June 1982 - bashing moves at 5p a go:

47100 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04
40143 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N35

Another entertaining Class 40 departure from Sunderland through the tunnel.

19th June 1989 - attending a job interview in Cranfield; not the easiest place to get to from the north east, and a fair trek from the nearest station. I decided that going via Carlisle was the best bet...

90012 Carlisle - Lancaster
86255 Lancaster - Preston
90018 Preston - Rugby
86426 Milton Keynes - Crewe
87021 Crewe - Carlisle

Did you get the job after all that hassle?.....or was it just an excuse for some extended haulage? ;)

By the time I reached Cranfield I think I had already decided that I didn’t really want to work there. Which was just as well, as I wasn't offered the job.

For those unfamiliar, it is a village with a university campus and an airfield. And for somewhere in the south of England, quite a distance from the nearest railway stations - Milton Keynes to the west and Bedford to the east.

Ah - the joys of "liberating" window labels!
These were my favourites by this time, hence spending any Saturdays out heading to New Street

I also didn't record anything from 1993 to mid 2018. During that time I did a lot of travel to London, mainly from 2006 onwards so lots of Pendos. I also travelled to Leeds a fair bit so would have had far more units than my current records show. Plus my two years commuting on Merseyrail.
Same here, would have cleared several classes (Northern ones at least) had I done so and would probably have cleared at least 1 pendo in the process for 10k miles! I started recording again in 2015 when the 37's appeared on the Cumbrian Coast, and I bought an ICRS book that also included unit numbers. Do have some loco hauled and preserved moves recorded from this time so have managed to piece bits and pieces together

Anyway back to 19/06, and my efforts in 1993,
31439 Barrow In Furness - Preston
31442 Preston - Poulton Le Fylde
1501xx Poulton Le Fylde - Salford Crescent
1420xx Salford Crescent - Manchester Victoria
31432 Manchester Victoria - Chester (My highest mileage 31)
37414 Chester - Manchester Victoria
31455 Manchester Victoria - Barrow In Furness

Just a shortish day for once, again the necessary annoying unit move due to the rover not being valid on the WCML.

If previous experience is anything to go by, my moves will be a subset of yours.
Correct! See below.

Tuesday 20/06/78
I was on my way from home in York to college in Harrogate when I got distracted:
46029 1126 York – Leeds
40155 1206 Leeds – York
DMU York – Leeds
31409 1338 Leeds – Harrogate
You see, I got there eventually!

Friday 20/06/80
After the two required Roarers from Euston to Rugby to Crewe, the rest of the overnight was a bit grim. It was the Liverpool portion of The Joiner to Stafford for the Manchester portion of The Splitter into Piccadilly.
86255 0126 Crewe – Stafford
86213 0300 Stafford – Manchester
From there it was an EMU back to Crewe, for a DMU to Chester to await the main event:
40042 0853 Chester – Cardiff via Wrexham
This was a schoolkids charter originating from Prestatyn, giving some of the local schoolkids an end of term trip to Cardiff to view Cardiff Castle etc. I was with a friend, and we approached a teacher and negotiated a rate of £5 each for the return trip to Cardiff, in our own personal compartment. Result. (We didn’t receive any form of ticket, so I suspect our “fares” went straight into the staff drinking fund). This was all rare class 40 track, and new for me. On arrival at Cardiff we declined their kind invitation to join the teachers spending the day shepherding children around Cardiff Castle, and instead went to visit Woodhams Scrapyard at Barry Island, which at that time still contained over a hundred derelict steam locos, plus two or three diesels. I think we sat and ate our lunch in D6122, which was cut up later that year.
Late afternoon we returned to Cardiff just to see if anything interesting might produce before we took the 40 back north:
31422 1600 Cardiff – Newport
47088 1705 Newport – Cardiff
I needed both locos, so couldn’t complain.
40042 1800 Cardiff – Prestatyn
The return was a memorable trip. We managed to get a compartment to ourselves again. The non-stop passage through Shrewsbury was especially striking; it was a warm evening so we had all the windows open, the signals cleared and the driver suddenly applied full power as 40042 simply battered its way through the middle road. Arrival at Chester was 25 minutes earlier than scheduled. After the Lord Mayor’s Show comes the Dustcart:
47438 2215 Prestatyn – Holyhead

Sunday 20/06/82
I had worked late shift the previous evening at Euston, and had come out overnight in the hope of chasing more class 40s.
85006 0047 Stafford – Crewe
47564 (+85006 dead) 0127 Crewe = Preston via Stockport, Manchester Victoria, Bolton
The usual Saturday night dragging. At Preston there was a rather more attractive loco lined up for the next move:
40145 (+86247 dead) 0406 Preston – Crewe via Bolton, Manchester Victoria, Miles Platting, Stockport
With load 11 + dead electric, 40145 had plenty to shout about on Miles Platting Bank. This was to be my final run with 40145 in BR ownership, but I’ve since clocked up many more miles with it as a CFPS loco. Nowadays it is with LSL on loan.
Back at Crewe, we wanted to return to Manchester to cover the Manchester to North Wales morning departures which were due to be diverted because of engineering works. But where is the Crewe – Manchester EMU? It’s not in the usual north end bay. Eventually we tracked down a DMU sitting in a south facing bay! That was indeed the Manchester train, which set off towards the Shrewsbury lines then stopped at Gresty Lane, reversed, and took the Independent Lines round the back of Crewe station. Novelty bonus.
40143 0950 Manchester Victoria – Llandudno
This train not only produced one of the desirable rare split-box class 40s but was also diverted via Bolton and Wigan Wallgate to Douglas Bank Signal Box, where the loco ran round. We returned via Wallgate onto the WCML to Golborne Jn., then round the curve up to Newton le Willows and Earlestown, picking up our normal path from there.
40143 1420 Llandudno – Chester
I could have stuck with 40143 all the way back to Manchester then headed south, but the prospect of extra class 40 mileage was too tempting, so I alighted at Chester for a second round trip to Llandudno.
40012 1615 Chester – Llandudno
40012 1903 Llandudno – Manchester Victoria
Back at Manchester there was time for a beer before heading over to Piccadilly for The Joiner to take me home to Euston. We’d had a quote (from a normally reliable source) that the 2240 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead was allocated to 47452 tonight, but just thought we’d check on our way back from the pub, just in case it had been swapped.
Hell’s teeth - it’s a 40, in fact it’s a split-box 40 – is it 40143 again? No, it’s 40138. Cancel all previous plans, get on this train and improvise something different!
40138 2240 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead
This was now a big NB rateable class 40 on a high-mileage class 47/4 cyclical diagram. How long could it last? The full diagram was:

ECS Holyhead CS – Bangor
0709 Bangor – Manchester Victoria
ECS to / from Red Bank Carriage Sidings
1045 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead
1517 Holyhead - Manchester Victoria
ECS to / from Red Bank Carriage Sidings
2240 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead
ECS to Holyhead CS / LD to Holyhead Depot for fuel and service
[Repeat]

Wednesday 20/06/84
As a change from my usual commuting moves, I decided after finishing a 12-hour day shift in Leeds Control that I would go home the scenic (and noisy) route:
31434 + 31427 1910 Leeds – Selby (1635 Carlisle – Hull)
47543 2029 Selby – York

20th June 1989:

After the previous day's failed effort I had to attend another job interview:

47827 Newcastle - New St
90028 New St - Carlisle

This time the day was a success and I ended up with the company for almost 13 years.

20th June 2001:

Day 1 of a three day outing.

I headed down to London on a Tram and made my way over to Kensington Olympia for a day photting, hanging around long enough to see the top and tail 73s on parcels that was an early evening highlight. I then took a stroll via Paddington and a pub or two to Euston, where I had a reservation on the 'Highlander' overnight. I won't call it the 'sleeper' as I was pretty much awake all night. Indeed 'overnight' was always the usual term for, well, overnight trains, as many didn't convey sleepers, just a semi-brake or two tacked on to the parcels vans. Most of the seated coach was occupied by a party from a posho school off on a walking trip to the West Highlands. So we all had the early hours leap at Waverley to look forward to.

90016 Euston - Waverley

To be continued...

Railway enthusiasts were a very rare breed in Medway. I never met another...
When were you spotting in Medway? I was spotting mostly in Rochester/Strood from 1977-86 on and off (away for university, hence the Leicester reports earlier in this thread). There was a small bunch of us spotters, mostly from Gillingham, most of whom went on to work for the railway.
Back in the day, the biggest excitement there came from visiting freight locos (47s on Dover ferry traffic, 47s, then later Eastleigh 33s and WR 56s on the Westbury-Allington) and also summer excursions to Margate/Ramsgate with 47s from the ER or WR with exotic start points like Treherbert (or boring 33s on 10/11 coaches if they'd come up the Midland with a 45 or WCML with an electric).

Typical day out was up to London on the first off-peak service, a circular tour of the non-SR termini, possibly with a trip out to Willesden/walk to Old Oak, and then choose somewhere to watch the rush hour go by.
Alternatively, train to Woolwich, walk the foot tunnel, DMU North Woolwich to Stratford, and sit on the platforms watching the freight go by.
Then we discovered that day returns were allowed with no rush-hour restriction to long-distance destinations, so a ridiculously early start from Medway got you onto an 06-something from Euston to either Manchester or Warrington before 1000.

Starting late summer 1974 I think the first place I ever spotted at was Strood. I would mainly frequent Rochester though as it was always interesting to see what locos might be in the yard below the embankment. Occasional trips to Gillingham but cannot think why. I preferred Rochester to Strood as I hated seeing stuff on the Rochester to Sole Street line too far away to id !. I probably did not see much freight on the Medway Valley line so preferred to see inter-regional services at Rochester. I used to ride my bike over to Hoo Junction for locos.

My first trip up to London was Strood-Charing Cross then Bakerloo line to Queens park. I then walked to Willesden Junction thoroughly checking all access points for my target - Willesden Depot. My London A-Z was giving too many clues !. I then doubled back down Scrubs Lane to the Canal and along the canal to Old Oak Common. From the Canal I remember clearing my Hymeks - all 11(iirc) of them derelict in a line. My heart jumps as I write this. Such a sad sight of what were originally quite attractive locomotives. That was possibly 1975. Subsequently I endured the demise of the Westerns.

I spent a lot of time around Birmingham as my grandparents were in Sutton Coldfield. New Street mainly (yearning for the sound of MD655s) and then tearing myself away to Bescot. For variety I used to take the bus from Sutton Coldfield to Tamworth. Where I would regularly through the day get thrown of the station as spotting was not allowed. Also day returns to Manchester for 76s etc.

September 1979 to about July 1982 I did little spotting as I was at University (in Birmingham). Then up to about 1984 not much as working long hours with a long journey Strood - Paddock Wood - Tonbridge - Edenbridge. I do remember absorbing the Hastings units at Tonbridge - that was my EE thrash action !.

Then in about 1984 I started an IT training job. Eventually myself and another guy realised we were both interested in railways. We have done a lot of spotting together ever since.
