I probably took a train 11 years ago today from Feldmoching to München-Flughafen: this was my final day at work until the 28th, then I caught a Lufthansa jet from MUC to LHR. I would have probably then used a RailAir bus to Reading, followed by a local train from Reading to Goring and Streatley. No 387s back then: they were still a good half-decade off!

If this can include coach travel (given we have a large section dedicated to buses and coaches) I caught a National Express from Reading Calcot to Plymouth on this day in 2012. The weather was windy as hell, and the coach was swaying. Wasn't the most pleasant journey. However, I think trains were disrupted in Devon or Somerset too due to the weather.

11 years ago today I'd have been back at work in München after my Xmas break. I might have been on a late shift, so took the S-Bahn to München-Hauptbahnhof, ALEX as far as Freising, another S-Bahn back to Neufahrn and a further S-Bahn to the Flughafen. Then of course a S-Bahn home after my shift. If I was on an early shift, I might have done the trip in reverse. The chord from the airport to Freising only opened in 2017, I believe, so a reversal at Neufahrn is no longer necessary.

Friday 2nd January 1981

This starts off as a typical evening move chasing Deltics, however this was the last week that the 1705 KX-Hull was booked for Deltic, before going over to an HST. After arrival at Hull No.15s next duty was the 2100 to Doncaster. This train consisted of two steam heated Mk 1 coaches and several mail vans, an easy task for a Deltic. No.15 was booked to return on the 0355 Hull but tonight it re-engined the 2120 Bradford- KX and so I followed it to London.

Saturday 2nd January 1982

After many journeys following Deltics this was down to the last two. Our party was booked into the rear two coaches on the outward journey. I remember that I didn’t get to see or hear much from No.15 that day. At Kings Cross the platform was packed with enthusiasts wanting to get their last photo. I returned to the back of the train for the journey to Edinburgh. It was quite incredible the number of people out on the line side and at the stations waiting to get their last glimpse of the train. Arrival at Edinburgh was approximately 1400, with the return booked to depart at 1430. With the large crowd I decided that there would be little point in trying watch No.15 head off to Haymarket so I got myself positioned at the very front of the train where I would be able to enjoy No. 22 for the final time. I stood all the way to the Cross.

This was the final time that the 0700 Hull-KX and 1705 return were Deltic hauled. The return train to Hull was packed with enthusiasts which became even more self evident when most of us returned on the 2100 Hull-Doncaster, load 2!

I would be really interested to know the ID of the HST set or power cars if your recorded them. I appreciate not many bashers were that interested in "trams" back in the day, but 46 years later it would be helpful in my efforts to document the early days of WR HST working.

Today there were a number of new year relief trains, which meant that there was the opportunity to make a daytime return journey to “The Cross” in steam-heat Mark I coaches.

Saturday 5th January 1980

The move for today was to get to London and cover the overnight services to Edinburgh which were being diverted via Carlisle and Beattock. Catching the 1550 from York would give me ample time in London to cover the 2000 / 2100 / 2230 services north. However Deltic 4, recently returned to service after spending many months in works, had come out to play. With it being low mileage for me, at the time, I decided that I would travel behind it on the 1814 service to London. This was a risky strategy if I wanted to get to Edinburgh via Carlisle because it’s arrival into KX was not scheduled until 2104, leaving only one service north for me, the 2230. Fortunately for me a I had a good run into KX with a slightly early arrival. I had positioned myself at the front of the train to give myself the best chance of catching the 2100 service north. Emerging from Gas Works tunnel I could see Deltic 3 on the Edinburgh service. The train seemed to crawl along the platform before it came to a halt. Dashing round to platform 8 I managed to catch the service before it left a couple of minutes late.
