The class 508s were withdrawn from traffic because of issues with leaves on the line. The class 73 workings operated from 02/11/81 to 04/12/81, a period of 5 weeks. In the evening peak the 1732 to Pompey and the 1734 to Basingstoke were loco hauled Mark Is. The TC diagram stayed out all day and in the evening included the 1629 up from Pompey.

Sorry, I've just seen this, I realise it's not November anymore.

I never knew about this little bit of South Western Division history with 73s hauling regular services. Unfortunately I missed it by less than 12 months, starting to use the Portsmouth Direct in September 1982!

IIRC there was an issue with the braking systems on the inner suburban units (wheel slide detection). A couple of unit diagrams on the Pompey line were changed to pairs of 73s and either TC stock or a mark 1 set to free up the units to cover the inner suburban workings.

I can’t recall how long the loco hauled workings ran for but it was Mondays to Fridays until a work around for the brake issues were resolved.
That diagram (inc. 1018 Waterloo-Portsmouth) was one which stayed on the Direct all day, if I remember right (or at least it was in subsequent years), covering various '82's and '83's - which might have been the reason for choosing that particular diagram over others. It was usually 8CIG so the TCs were like-for-like from a passenger POV.

... which was of course an '83' (headcode), meaning a 73-hauled service from the likes of Witley or Byfleet and New Haw would have been possible.

What was with the Bristol-Portsmouth services stopping at St Denys? Was there engineering works that day or was it normal for the time?

It was normal. The Pompey-Bristol service was part of the local service. The standard stopping pattern was:

Portsmouth and Southsea
Fratton
Cosham
Portchester
Fareham
Swanwick
Netley
Woolston
St Denys
Southampton

Ah, ok, thanks. Interesting to hear that, as 1977 was a few years before my time; so no fast service to Bristol in those days by the looks of it - but opportunity for 31 haulage for local commuter journeys in the Solent area.

The pattern I always remember pre-electrification was 1tph fast (non-stop Fareham to Southampton) to Bristol or Cardiff (33+Mk-I; later 155), one all-stations stopper (3H) and one all-stations stopper to Eastleigh, extending to Reading in alternate hours (3H).

That said there is a residual semi-fast service to Romsey (1tp2h) or Salisbury (1tp2h) in 1982 in addition to the Bristol/Cardiff fast and all-stations service. This disappeared in 1983.

I used to visit Speke Yard/Junction a lot in those days as Class 58s were operating on Toton to Garston Dock coal trains. On this day 89001 came to Allerton on a test train, reversed on the triangle to Speke Junction SB and then headed back south to Crewe
A winner.

With the introduction of a full HST service less than two months away I wanted to travel to Edinburgh and back with a Deltic. No.3 duly obliged working the 0900 from KX and the 1700 return from Edinburgh. It transpired that this would be my final journey through Penmanshiel Tunnel which was located between Berwick and Dunbar. At the time engineering work was taking place with single line working in operation. This work involved lowering the tunnel floor to allow larger freight containers to pass through. The tunnel collapsed the following Saturday with the tragic death of two workers. The line remained closed until the following August whilst a new deviation was created.

I again saw 89001 on the same test train in 03/11/1987 at Allerton Station.

A couple of days late but I was busy on the weekend:

09 March 2020: EC278 Budapest to Prague, I think it was a Czech engine the whole way but I wasn't too interested. I just wanted it to get to Prague so that I had time for some dinner and my flight home (which was delayed). It was all achieved, then the world went crazy within days of my return!

I was intending to travel to the West Country via the Down Midnight out of Paddington. I am presuming that it must have been a 47 because I would not normally of chosen to cover the 0245 Waterloo-Bournemouth. Whenever I did travel on it I often overslept the Eastleigh stop and found myself waking up in Bournemouth. Today I was pleased with myself by managing to stay awake and make my connection to Portsmouth, or so I thought. Due to engineering work the train terminated short at Fareham. Instead of having a Crompton to Portsmouth for a Crompton back to Salisbury I ended taking a Thumper to Southampton and then another one, which should have been loco hauled, to Salisbury.

Chaos reigned today; there had been a significant snowfall overnight which coincided with the collapse of Penmanshiel Tunnel causing major disruption to most services. I arrived at York station about 0730 to find the 0650 to London still waiting to depart. I took the train to Grantham where I managed to catch an even later running Leeds-KX service. I had planned to travel to Edinburgh on the 0900 from KX but quickly abandoned this idea. From KX I returned north with my first visit to Hull with a Deltic. It was diverted via Selby which was probably weather related. By the time I had returned to York at about 1930 the timetable was still all over the place particularly services coming from Scotland.

I went to see York City play Colchester United, City won 3-1. I remember being particularly impressed with the speed that I returned to York. Leaving the football ground at the final whistle I jumped into a taxi which enabled me to catch the 1540 Norwich-Liverpool St with seconds to spare. An on time arrival at London allowed a quick connection onto a Circle Line tube to Kings Cross. Another dash to the mainline terminus and again with seconds to spare I managed to join the 1800 service to York. Just after eight o’clock after 3 and a quarter hours I was in a York pub having a pint!

I once had a day return Newcastle to Swansea (attending interview at the Uni). Set off at 21:00 the day before, arrived back around 06:00 the day after.

In between times, my first four Cromptons for haulage.

Full details somewhere up thread!

A Merrymaker day excursion to Southampton and Bournemouth. Although there was only a few hours available to us at our destination I managed to visit Eastleigh TMD and take a trip to Poole for my first ever 33 haulage.

A spotting trip to Bristol and Cardiff. It was the only time that I saw 1200 Falcon, dumped out of use at Ebbw Jnc.
