Edit: see also post #679.
Which mentions
40185 Paddington - Brum 26/5/80

I was lucky enough to get the gen and did 40185 from Padd with a colleague. It came light from Hinksey with a Bescot driver and an Oxford pilot.

From Brum I headed off to North Wales but my moves book disappeared years ago.

I heard of a well known 40 basher who came to ‘view’ what was at Paddn that afternoon, assumed the whistling noise was a refurbed 50 and went to the Cross. Ooops.

From memory (!) I think I was on nights, and found out about it long after the event.

I was early shift at Reading Booking Office that day and 40158 happened to be on my train home. Which was nice.....
Next day was a trip to Ireland;

Monday 20th June 1983
47463 0238 Crewe-Holyhead. On arrival at Holyhead, I, and a few other passengers, intended to take the Summer-only additional early morning sailing to Dun Laoghaire, only to find that Sealink had postponed its introduction! So a way had to be found to pass the time until the next sailing (other than hang around in Holyhead);
47463 0612 Holyhead-Euston (to Llandudno Jc)
DMU Llandudno Jc-Holyhead
47342 1010 Holyhead-Euston (to Bangor)
47446 1115 Bangor-Scarborough (to Llandudno Jc)
47463 (again) 0805 Euston-Holyhead (from Llandudno Jc)

What about your CIÉ haulage later in the day?....or weren't there any?

There were! I also have many other Irish and European trips, which will appear at a future date. But to complete the day, these were the post-ship journeys on 20th June 1983;

189 1856 Bray-Dublin Connolly (from Dun Laoghaire)
078 2100 Dublin Heuston-Cork (to Kildare)
087 1845 Cork-Dublin Heuston (from Kildare)

Even more ridiculous out-of-area duffs coming up on the loco hauled Edinburgh-Glasgows and Carstairs portions over the next few weeks on this thread........;)
See post 3327 above where I had "you" (I.e. 47412) on a Carstairs portion...

I needed Stratford-on-Avon for a Class 47, and not only did this Parspec fit the bill, but it did both routes as well - bonus!

47466 1M88 Coventry - Birmingham NS
47534 1L00 B'ham NS - Stratford-on-Avon (Carlisle-Stratford Parspec, via Shirley)
47534 1L00 Stratford-on-Avon - Birmingham NS (Stratford-Carlisle Parspec, via Hatton)
47448 1O09 Birmingham NS-Coventry

Thursday 23rd June 1988
87015 1G49 Coventry-B'ham NS
47547 1O03 B'ham NS-Reading (via Solihull)

Why am I festering for a few hours on New Street in the small hours for the 0424 to Poole? Because 47276, one of my last few 47s, worked out of Paddington on a commuter train last night, so there's a chance it might be working again today in the peak this morning...

... it didn't. Right, plan B is a trip to the seaside and some more new track. 1Z26 was a Duddeston-Barry Island children's school excursion, imagine being allowed on one of those today...

47590 1M09 Reading-Coventry
86235 1M09 Coventry-Birmingham NS
304023 B'ham NS-Duddeston
47525 1Z26 Duddeston-Barry Island (via Chepstow) (new 47 track Radyr Branch Jc - Barry Island)
47525 1Z26 Barry Island-Birmingham NS (via Chepstow)
317326 2A02 Birmingham NS-Coventry

Got back to find 47276 had worked out of Paddington again in the evening.

I hope it didn't evade you......

A quick check of my book shows I only had it the once, from Audley End to Liv St on 1C65 18.30 Kings Lynn - Liv St on 24th July 1983

Birmingham New Street [arrived 1551 against scheduled 1539]

As far as I can work out, this was my last ever class 85 haulage.

Knottingley lost its allocation of 47s in late 1981 as more 56s became available. Most if not all of them went to Healey Mills and Thornaby.

Thanks for that.....I recall there being a consecutively numbered batch of them based there. We went to Knottingley as spotters in about 1980 on a Scottish Railfans tour, and because it was a Sunday, the entire depot allocation was on shed!
Do you know what specific MGR working (presumably around Pontefract somewhere) that required the flashing light to be fitted? I was surprised at the thrash needed to move a MGR train at 1/4 mph, either full or empty, so I assume it must have been in a noisy environment to warn that the train was actually moving slowly.

47277 and 47373 were the two fitted with the flashing light around 1973/74. It was part of a trial for MGR trains to be driverless when unloading at power stations, the light flashed when the loco was being remote controlled using this system. Not sure if it was a particular location or working. Another system was trialled later on in the 80s, when two 56s were also so fitted (56073/074 IIRC).

The long-term KY 47s were 47277/296/301-304/308-310/319/371-375. A few others, such as 47179, were allocated there for short periods.

Top info, thanks very much. I love the knowledge on this forum! Much appreciated!
I actually own quite a number of remotely operated class 47s......all in N gauge!! :lol:

Was the intention that the Traincrew would have their PNB while their train was unloaded?

I remember being told at the time it was trialled at Drax, but I've got nothing to evidence it and Mr Google isn't helping
That also rings a bell with me, but as you say t'Internet is not a massive help here. I dare say there would have been more information in the magazines of the time.

More teasers....! I was out quite a lot in the summer of 1983, and given our loco preferences, it will be interesting to see if we were ever on the same services! Or if one of us caught something that the other missed!
My two week ALR from 83 isn't until end of next month.....but Sat 6th August 1983 was a classic duff day for me.....probably my best ever......so there's a teaser right back! :lol:

For me too - a pair of 37s out of Keighley is the plan!
