Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone can give me a quick guide as to how to remove the bulb on a bardic lamp?

Having removed the front plastic casing, I can't seem to be able to unscrew the bulb at all, on either of my lamps.

I'm wondering if you need to remove the bottom casing and get it out that way?

Cheers.

Dan.

The bulb is mounted in a "butterfly" style holder, that pushes into the reflector unit.

Firstly remove the outer reflector, to leave the smaller, inner unit which holds the bulb.

You need to hold the butterfly unit at the edges, and pull out gently. The bulb should then come out at the rear of the holder unit.

Alternately yours might be the style where you just rotate the bulb in the holder and it will release (but I doubt it).

Just done it by taking the outer glass off, then taking the bottom off and pushing upwards, to follow OT's steps above.

Pull off the black rubber seal on the front of the lamp. You will find the bulb held in place with a sliver bulb holder. Prise this silver holder out of the lamp, this will the give you access to the bulb.
Take some WD40 and turn the on/offswitch and spray the on off shaft with the WD40.
This will free up the switch and make changing the colours easier.
You may find that the black clips on either side of the lamp are hard to move. This is because they are rusted springs on the inside of the lamp.
To move these clips, turn the lamp upside down, and put the black plastic clip on the an edge, press down and this should release the spring so the metal bottom drops off to exspose the battery.
Take of the bottom of the lamp and you will see the spring on both insides of the lamp.
Give that a blast of WD 40 and then move both springs up and down to free them off.
Everytime I replaced a battery in my Bardic, I have had to to the above.

Thanks for the tips, lads! I shall try the above in the morning!

I assume the bulbs would be quite easy to get hold of in somewhere like homebase if I took a blown one down..?

I'm off to the National Eisteddfod this morning, so from the title of this thread I thought you had prose and poetry on the mind! :)

Wickes sent me to Homebase who sent me to Medway who sent me to a Car Spares shop who, surprisingly, had bulbs for a bardic lamp! =D

Bulb changed and battery replaced, (albeit with a new issue battery showing an expiration date of 03/2007)!

Thanks for the help, lads.

Inside the battery compartment in your Bardic is a little Terry clip. This Terry clip is for a spare bulb.
If you are on or about the railway in the dark or in a tunnel do not drop the lamp a it will nak the bulb.
I always carried a spare bulb and battery.
Over the years I have had about 30 Bardics. The reason is leaving them on trains headstocks of waggons I've just brake tested, stolen, broken and a lot more reasons.
I once left my Bardic at Morley Station, near Leeds, on top of a gate post after a 12 hour ballast turn.
I went back for it later on and brought it home.
Saved having to explain where it went.
This lamp is handy for repeling idiots on the last train to Donny on a Saturday night.

Is my Bardic unusual?
It has a BLUE aspect instead of a GREEN. and is yellow painted rather than metallic finish.

Nothing special, it's just an ex fire service bardic. Railway, military and fire service all used em. Railway tended to be silver, military green and fire service yellow. Apparently the blue light filters better through smoke. We had several of them donated to the GCR some time ago. The 3 I've owned have all differed slightly, the latest is a modern NRS one but I preferred the army one I had before!

When DOO(NP) came in 1996, the drivers of such a train had to carry 2 lamps.
They were both Bardics, on standard colour and the other was painted yellow.
At this time we were still running trains with oil tail lamps.
The Navy and other use these lamps, so there nowt about the yellow lamp only it might have been meant for another job not the railway.
