Butt's is off to Barrow in January on a "Virgin relatively cheapie" - unfortunately the second leg is on Northern from Lancaster - will it be a boneshaker. I was to tight to pay the higher fares that included a TPE transfer.

Talking of Barrow other than the Dock Museum is there anything else worth seeing in the Town ? I'm only there for a few hours.

I've never been to Barrow before so I'm quite looking forward to it :p

You should be on a 156 or a 153 however a 142 is possible.

Get off at Ulverston it looks a nice wee town. It was on Vintage Antiques Roadshow the other day. If you go to Barrow the BAE Submarine Yard is also worth a visit.

To paraphrase Dr. Johnson "The finest prospect a Barrovian ever saw was the high road to Falkirk"

There's a bus to Coniston from Ulverston, a pleasant ride and destination if the weather's OK.

Ho Ho - unfortunately it's a "flying visit" by Train or I would have checked Ulverston out :p

Oh the joys, serves me right for being so tight :p
at first, the 142 ran on the 05:19 from Preston, came off at Barrow, worked to Sellafield and back and then onto Carlisle. It then worked through to Lancaster.

That said, I saw a picture of a 142 with Barrow on the front at Lancaster in daylight the other day so I don't think this diagram is valid any more.

Of course, a Pacer does offer excellent panoramic views of the Furness line...

Only been on the Furness line a couple of times over recent months, but both times any Northern units I've passed have been 153s / 156s.

I had the pleasure of a 142 from Nethertown to Corkickle at 4PM recently. 3 words for that. Rammed. Warm. Bouncy!

Actually there are more words to describe the experience, but this is a family forum and I will respect that.:D:D

Ulverston is a lovely little town and is somewhere that modernisation appears to have passed by. Lovely little narrow streets and lots of independent shops makes for a nice day out.

Other than the WCML I've never been anywhere in Cumbria or the Lakes by train as work always insist the car is quicker and cheaper from Edinburgh. I must get round to doing the full run at some point, although After having done Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria on a pacer back in September I'm not sure I could cope with another long run on one.

Usually a lovely 156 in my experience. 153's appear sometimes but they prefer to keep them to the Carlisle - Barrow terminators.

Barrow town centre is several minutes walk from the station. Town is O.K. for a medium-sized industrial town, but not spectacular. Plenty of shopping & food / refreshment outlets if you need them. Winter is probably not the best time to visit, but if you have time, you could walk over the bridge to Walney Island. I think the waterfront area is still in process of redevelopment. But the best scenery is probably what you will see on the journey to Barrow, especially in the Arnside / Grange area.

Pacers do appear on the line although in recent years it has become very rare to see them, most Northern rail trains I have seen along there are 156s or 158s but 153s can also be seen, I would say about 1 in 40 trains I have seen along there are 142s.

Grange-over-Sands along the route is quite nice if you want to stop there, I have walked along the promenade there many times. Walnley Island is nice to look at if you have time to get there and Furness Abbey just outside Barrow is a local attraction that I have been to many times and enjoyed.

Never heard of (Northern Rail) 158s along there. Do Workington / Barrow / Lancaster even sign them?

Don't think I have ever seen one beyond Barrow but that's not to say they have never been beyond there. I know there was a problem back in 2000 on the line between Roose and Barrow and trains were taking the park south line and then reversing after but the 158s and 175s used at the time weren't cleared for Park South so they couldn't go that way but I am not sure if that is still the case.

With Pacers along the line they were very regular along there until 97 when First North Western started replacing them with 175s and by 2002 Pacers had virtually disappeared from there. Northern Rail brought them back but then slowly started removing them again to which point they are only occasionally used. I think most of the Leeds to Morecambe trains at Carnforth are still run by 144s

I don't know of 158's ever getting on the line either - 158's don't venture across from Leeds to Lancaster as far as I know, nor do I recall them venturing from Manchester Victoria up that way either.

142's I have previously seen in the "depot" just north of Barrow and about this time last year one was working the last Saturday night Barrow to Millom service. I believe Northern try to keep the full Lancaster to Carlisle runs to 156's (and has been such the couple of times I have done it) but realistically a 142, 153 or 156 could turn up on any diagram
