This stubborn building still exists. I don't think it has had any use since 1955?

It has trees literally growing inside it.

Surely its on the agenda to get it destroyed sometime soon?

I think the shed was in use until at least around 1960 - the local trains in particular were steam-hauled until DMUs took over in January 1960. Longer distance trains, both passenger and goods, remained steam-hauled for some while thereafter. In the early 1970s I can recall seeing diesel locos standing outside the shed - although I don't think the shed was in use by then.

I assume that NR don't want to sell off the land and can't be bothered to go to the expense of knocking the shed down.

For comparison, the engine shed at St Albans City station closed in 1960 and was demolished in 1965. The area was used for car parking until about ten years ago when a new multi-storey carpark was built roughly where the engine shed had once stood, together with new flats.

It may not have had any specific allocation by then, but I'm fair certain that Bedford was still housing locomotives in 1966, and quite possibly 1967. Could have been even later too, I don't know.

The photo looks like it was being re-roofed. Probably early 50s?

It was definitely a diesel serving point for a while after it closed.

I have loads of pictures but they are not mine. I am only 40+ years old and was not born when these were taken.

ah I see, twas a scan.

There's nothing on railway history in Bedfordshire on the net, maybe someone could start one? :)

The 2 major places I've lived (Leeds and Rugby) both have dedicated website to railways in their area. Bedford does not (apart from St Johns on disused-stations), would love some old pictures of the many previous layouts

I will upload some other pictures on the photo gallery section for you.

They are not my pictures so if I get asked to take them down I will have to. So snap them up quickly.

By the way, the 2 pictures are different. Taken a few seconds from each other. Taken from the coal dispense tower or whatever its called. Obviously someone climbed up the ladder to the top for the picture.

Put some pics for you - http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?p=2218041#post2218041
