Hello everyone, first time poster but have lurked on here a few times over the years when needed questions answering that you've already discussed in a thread.

So I've recently been offered a job as a grade 2 Signaller in London. I had my medical last Friday, the lady conducting the medical said I satisfied "network rail level 5" which was what I needed for a Signaller (what she said at the end) I was relieved as I do have hearing loss in my right ear and thought it would be a concern. Anyway a couple of days before that I emailed over my completed formal offer (didn't get a confirmation, should I chase this up?). So I'm just waited for the results of the drug and alcohol test (will be fine). What should I expect next? Will my manager ring me with details on when signalling school starts? As I have a 28 day notice period to complete on my current job would be nice to know ASAP. My manager mentioned a course starting 14th November at York, would that be my first day of employment with Network Rail? Just so many things going though in my head, really want to pack this job in ASAP and have a couple weeks R&R before Signalling school. How intense is the course? My father did Signalling school about 10 years ago, but I've heard it's changed and there are now no tests?

Anyway Im sure I'll be on here regularly from now on!

The theory, when I did it at least, was that we'd have a week in the company's employment before heading off to signalling school, just to spend a bit of time in the box and sort out formalities in the office. It seemed quite flexible though - having arranged it all, they phoned me one Thursday and asked whether I'd be okay to start on Monday instead! Fortunately, my employer at the time was co-operative and I was able to do so, but still had to split that first week between the two employers - wasn't a problem though.

I would suggest ringing HR and just explaining your predicament and that you don't want a delay starting with them. Most of the HR guys and girls I've spoke to are always helpful

Cheers, just rang HR. They've received my offer back and know that I've accepted it. They're waited for my medical certificate to come through then I'll be told a start date! Can't wait!

tbh if a job offer meant me walking out without giving the notice I'd just do it, ring in some sickies or something, book owed leave etc. Especially if it was a job where if it was the other way round they'd be sending you to clear a desk & escorted off with no notice.

I mean I could do that, but I would rather not as I really like and respect my manager and it would leave him in a pile of s**t, but if needs must!
