I'm looking to go on a scenic train journey from Birmingham New Street on Thursday for a day out. I'm looking to travel no more than 3 hours. Where would you suggest is a good scenic journey?

The journey to Hereford is quite scenic after Worcester.

Cambrian Coast? There and back to Pwllheli would take far more than 3 hours, but you could go as far as you can get in an hour or so and turn round and come back.

(tries but fails to resist suggesting that anywhere is scenic compared with Birmingham New St, at least until the atrium opens :) )

For some reason I had it in my head that Shrewsbury was only half an hour, but you're right.

Hereford is indeed a nice run, done that on LM Great Escapes before. Nice place to wander around too.

In my opinion the best scenic route is a round robin from Birmingham New Street to Hereford via Bromsgrove , then up the marches to Shrewsbury then down to Birmingham via Wolverhampton not forgetting a few beers on the way :) done it a couple of times , recommended :)

anywhere is better than New Street!

Surely Cambrian Coast would be nicest from Brum

I was going to suggest Northampton...the south WCML is surprisingly scenic, though I think the bit through the Chilterns from Bletchley to Watford Jn is probably the nicest, particularly at dusk.

A variant would be Newport - out via Hereford back via Chepstow or vv.
