Best station for P&R to Wembley?

My parents will be travelling to and from Wembley from Chesterfield next Sunday for the League Cup final. It looks like doing the whole thing by train is out, due to the finish time of the game and engineering works closing part of the MML. Looked at a few other options, such as XC to Birmingham and then WCML or Chiltern down to Wembley, but the cost is prohibitive and it still might be tight to get a train back, especially if the game goes to extra time / penalties.

For obvious reasons they don't really want to drive the whole way and have to fight traffic and park near the stadium.

I'm thinking the best option would be to drive most of the way, and then park up and get a train for the last stretch to the stadium. The question is, which station would be the best option for a journey to one of the Wembley stations considering car parking availability and access from the motorway (M1 or M40.) I've been warned by a Spurs fan mate familiar with Wembley to avoid the tube at all costs, so Overground or WMT/Chiltern connections would be preferable.

Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks.

I would recommend parking in a residential street near to Kingsbury on the Jubilee line. One stop there and park to Wembley Park. Or near Canons Park Jubilee station. The only issue is getting back through Stanmore to the M1. Stanmore itself is more difficult to find parking. If not up to that and prepared to do the longer walk to Wembley Central and queue for a long time to get back on a train toward Watford. Around Bushey station you can find unrestricted parking in local streets. Use contactless cards to touch in and out to get the cheapest oyster rather than paper ticket fares. Bushey is close to Junction 5 of the M1. If you take the Bushey option and can't face the walk and long queuing of the Wembley Central crowd control on the return. You can always go to Wembley Park -Jubilee Line to Stanmore and then 142 bus to Bushey. It is quicker than Wembley Central back toward Watford. Wembley Park is pretty quick if you are going north rather than back toward central London. I always prefer it to Wembley Central on the return toward Watford.

Check to make sure that Chiltern services will be stopping at Wembley for the match.

Why not make a weekend of it?

Drive down to Oxford Parkway, you can park there for:-

12 - £2
24 - £4
48 - £8
72 - £12

And take the train from there to Marylebone

Park for the same rates at Thornhill (Oxford) and you can either take the X90 (via Baker Street) or The Tube (via Notting Hill Gate) to London for £18 return.

High Wycombe, Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross all have large car parks for weekday commuters that are unlikely to be full at weekends. None are that close to the M40 which runs to the south of the A40 with the railway line to the North. That means you have to drive through Wycombe, Beaconsfield or Gerrards to get to the stations. Again on a Sunday, it's not going to be particularly busy, hopefully.

Chiltern will sometimes operate a special timetable, stopping all trains at Wembley in both directions.

Hillingdon station without a doubt. Served by frequent Metropolitan line trains direct to Wembley Park. Fare is £1.50 each way with Oyster Pay As You Go/CPC (£1 with Railcard) and parking is £1.70 all day on Sundays. About 1 Min off the A40.
