Unfolded bikes cannot be carried in deep tunnel sections as it would hinder an emergency evacuation.

As Tubeboy says, bikes are not allowed in the deep tunnels (or tunnels of a single bore I believe). Effectively, this map shows which sections of the LU map are deep tunnels.

Why the difference between rules for deep any shallow tunnels? Surely they are both just as hard to evacuate?

A single bore tunnel (i.e Victoria Line) is very narrow. A shallow tunnel (District/ Circle line) is not. Similarly, bicycles are not allowed into deep level stations as they may hinder evacuations (hence why bicycles are not allowed on the DLR to Bank)

Tube tunnels are single-track tunnels and Tube trains are smaller and more restricted internally. Most platforms are usually accessed by long staircases or escalators.

Subsurface tunnels are largely double-track and much more spacious. Subsurface trains also tend to be larger inside. Most platforms are accessed by short flights of stairs or short escalators.

The underground has two types of tunnel, known as "deep" or "tube" tunnels, used by the small round trains, and "subsurface" or "cut and cover" tunnels, used by the large (mainline-sized) rectangular trains.

What about bagged (as in fully enclosed in a bag) full-size cycles? ISTR reading somewhere that the size limit for items on LU was 2m (yes 2m as in 200cm) length - that's if there is one at all!

I've seen a whole host of items permitted on LU that would prove just as much an evacuation hazard as a bike of any sort. Just today I saw a man with his large step ladder and recently someone with an armchair!

There's a difference between "Permitted by the rules" and "the station staff turned a blind eye because it was quiet/they were distracted"

Of course. I probably should have been clearer in my post in that I meant permitted as in the station staff turned a blind eye!

Has anyone seem someone take a bike on the deep level tube?

I've seen "suitcases" that are massive especially on the Piccadilly. I'm sure they'd be an hazard in an emergency.

Significantly more generous than the luggage allowance on National Rail services; 0.3m*0.7m*0.9m :D

I've seen bikes on the deep tubes a few times, and recall a Victoria line driver at Highbury once announcing that the train wouldn't move until the gentleman with the bicycle left
