Hi,

Im trying to work out a journey for a friend who holds a Network Railcard. Brighton to Wigan on 22/02 returning 26/02.

I tried inputting journeys via Milton Keynes Central and Northampton but not getting much results, I think via these stations she would need to go Via Birmingham also?

Im coming up with prices around £108.. Don't think thats much different to standard price, I tried via MK and Northampton because I understand the railcards vadility ends and Northampton.

Anyone know this route who can advise please?

Thanks!

This suggestion doesn’t use the railcard.

Slower journey restricted to specific operators, and no arriving at London before 0950, but cheaper and otherwise flexible:

Brighton to Crewe Off Peak Return valid only on Southern and WMT services at £52.20.

Plus:

Crewe to Wigan Anytime Short Return; fully flexible at £17.90.

Total £70.10.

If specific trains can be committed to, then this price can probably be lowered.

As I understand, Brighton to Milton Keynes is covered by the Network Railcard.

Cheapest single MK-Wigan or vice versa is £23.00. Off-peak return is £67.90. Of course this requires at least one train change more than the more expensive version....

A good bet might be

Brighton to London St Pancras Off-Peak Return for £21.85 with Network Railcard. This is only valid on trains departing Brighton after 09.30.

Walk to Euston

Euston to Crewe Advance Single on the 11.46 West Midlands Trains service, arrive Crewe 14.24. Just £9.00. No facilities on here though.

Crewe to Wigan Stations Anytime Return for £17.90, valid on any train. There's a train from Crewe at 15.09, gets in at 15.37.

On the return the only ticket you in addition need is the Crewe to Euston one, you can get one for £9.00 on the 12.02 from Crewe (arrive Euston at 14.50)

Total price £57.75

You have to weigh up the savings versus the extra travel time / reduction in flexibility.

The Network Railcard discount is not available until 10am on a weekday.

You can get Advance fares routed 'Southern and WMT' from Brighton to Liverpool Lime Street for £12 each way. Unfortunately you can't get the £12 Advance fare to Crewe and technically you can't finish short with an Advance. Enter via Kensington Olympia and then select slower services on a webtis site to get these fares to show.

Liverpool to Wigan is £7.20 each way.

Rather a long journey though.....

Hi,

Thanks for all the suggestions, looking at this one leaving Brighton on the 1005 Thameslink.

Bit worried about the tight connection at Euston. Is this ticket for the 1146 WMT to Crewe valid any later? Saw a open return £31. Couldn’t see the £9, maybe too late travel is on Thursday.

Thanks Wayne
