What is the distance between these two stations? I'm trying to calculate it and have noticed the mile markings don't appear on RTT for this route. I've tried doing it via Railmiles and have come to a dead end.

Bristol Temple Meads to Penzance shows as 207 miles.

Bristol Temple Meads to Tiverton Parkway shows as 59 miles.
Tiverton Parkway to Par shows as 103 miles.
Par to Penzance shows as 64 miles.

Both the routes are the same as I've checked both the routes it returns. One totals 207 miles and the other totals 226 miles.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Par to Penzance is 45 miles according to Railmiles.

Bristol to Penzance is indeed 207 miles (assuming you're not going via WSM).

I've jotted down the wrong number during my notes then. Sorry!

Why does it not show on RTT though?

None of the FGW Paddington to Penzance and vice versa show the milage on RTT.

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P00099/2013/08/07/advanced

I see. I thought you meant the mileage was broken halfway down.

In that case it could have been that it was not programmed properly. Might be worth letting Mr Cairns know.

How often does an FGW train go via Bristol on a Paddington-Penzance (or Plymouth) service? I believe I have seen services do this nonetheless.

Roughly 4/5 a day each way I think.

There is 1 service each way daily from Padding to Penzance via Bristol Temple Meads.

Down service departs PAD 0730, departs BRI 0913 and terminates PNZ 1317.
Up service departs PNZ 1739, departs BRI 2150 and terminates PAD 2357.

The mileage is probably not there because one or more of the locations listed had no mileage value listed. As RTT auto-completes routing to add intermediate stations/locations often they will add locations with no mileage, which due to the way Tom has programmed it will remove all mileage figures... AFAIK!

There are two up services via Bristol, the other departs Penzance at 0741 arriving at Paddington at 1338.

Bristol TM is at MP 118.31 (from Paddington).
Penzance is at MP 326.50.
Difference is 208.19.

However, the mileage goes via the original terminus at Plymouth Millbay, and the modern through route cuts off 1.13.
There's also the benefit from the St Germans deviation in Cornwall, which cuts off another 2 chains from the original mileage.
So today's Bristol-Penzance mileage is 207.02 (1.01 extra if running via Weston).

There is also a mileage change point east of Chacewater which removes another 2 chains from the total which would otherwise be 207 miles 4 chains.

National Rail Timetable 135 Page 35 says Penzance to Taunton = 162.25 miles:
Taunton to Bristol TM = 45.5 miles.

so total = 207.75 miles.
When calculating the mileage from the data in the sectional appendix Penzance to Taunton is 162 miles 21 chains (162.2625 miles) which to the nearest quarter of a mile is indeed 162.25 miles. Bristol to Taunton direct however is 44 miles 61 chains (44.7625 miles) so the total is 207 miles 2 chains or 207.025 miles.
