The bus station is too small so a lot of local routes serve the stops on the street just outside?

Not quite true - the vast majority of services DO stop at the bus station. There are some which run through the town (rather than terminate) for which it is more practical for them to stop on - usually Drapery.

Worth remembering that Northgate has 14 bays - which ought to be more than sufficient for a town of Northampton's size - Greyfriars had 28 of which a number were rarely if ever used.

Thanks for these replies back lads. I pretty much stayed in the same place but saw plenty of action!

Does anyone know who runs the “UNO” buses (university of Northampton was branded on the side but I doubt the university actually operates/runs them!, I’m guessing a local firm that’s branded and paid by the university?

UNO is Universitybus https://unobus.info
It is a commercial firm that began as an arms length business providing transport for the University in Hatfield but then expanded to take on other commercial work https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uno_(bus_company)

Mainly true. The original Hatfield based business is Universitybus Ltd, wholly owned by the University of Hertfordshire. The Northampton operation is Uno Buses Ltd, owned 50% by Universitybus Ltd, and 50% by the University of Northampton. Both trade as UNO (with some route branding on key routes), share common senior management, and a common fleet numbering scheme.
